Discuss GoodFellas

It just seemed to go too slow-paced for my tastes.. Is it just me?! joy

Its not Godfather, or Goodfellas, or Casino, Carlitos way or even Scarface. Once Upon a Time in America is the best gangster of movie.

Get Carter (UK)

Never seen it, didn't even know it was a gangster flick.

Never pay of mine either. And no, I didn't like GF that much; I liked Goodfellas more, but the "consensus" loves it (as it also does Goodfellas).

But I was referring to when you said, "another gangster movie.. beaten to death subject....falling asleep"...

Clearly, you must be young and fail to realize that Goodfellas inspired just about every gangster movie that proceeded it of the 90s and 2000s, and many may not have even been made without it.

It's actually also a contemporary heist movie that inspired other non-mafia heist movies the way that part of the film was done.

At the time it was released, only the Godfather was really considered a great mafia/gangster movie. But since it, yeah, those two inspired dozens. So you must not have been an adult or perhaps born yet when it came out to think it's "just another gangster movie". Lol

You're assuming that I like any of those dozens of gangster films that might have drawn inspiration from Goodfellas. But thing is, I didn't watch most of them. And yeah, I only watched Goodfellas last year. I think the movie didn't age well, unfortunately.

What?) In what way it didn't age well? It's based on a true story and was made shortly after this story took place in the real world. It perfectly conveys the atmosphere of its times. What is there to "age"? There are no special effects or anything like that, that may "age" and look silly with time. Acting, dialogues etc don't age either because it just represents the era in which these events took place. And when it comes to pure filmmaking, it's the same type of filmmaking (narration, long takes etc) that Scorsese still utilizes in his contemporary movies like "The Wolf of Wall Street"..

Movies like this one don't age. They never will.

I could't finish it myself. Too damn violent. If they cut out all of the violence and bloodshed then maybe I would find it enjoyable. There was no need for all of those killings.

You're kidding - the violence is one of Goodfellas' defining attributes. It's savage, sudden and horrific - Scorsese doesn't pull any punches and shows how vile gangster life is. If they removed it, the film would be largely pointless.

Wasn't there a version with the violence made suitable for kids?

Oh yes. It was called Home Alone grinning
