Agreed. I also prefer Once Upon a Time in New york to any of the Godfather films or Goodfellas.
I had this long argument with someone on IMDB who could just not accept that I could consider Captain America: Civil War to be a better film than The Godfather. I tried to explain to him that the only way I can compare films that are in completely different categories is to compare how they rank within their own category. The God Father doesn't even make my top 5 gangster films.

it seem all three of them are based in past far away, which I try to avoid and watch only contemporary movies, so sadly nothing...
Wow, really? I think you're really missing out on some gems by trying to avoid historical movies. Karakter is more about the father-son relationship than the 1930s anyway.
I'm not too fond of Dutch movies, but the historical movies always seem to be better than the contemporary ones. The only ones of that kind I remember watching without turning them off prematurely are Lek and Minoes.
Well okay, let me also recommend De Marathon, a Dutch comedy set in my hometown!

I remember seeing Minoes in cinema when I was little, haha.

Guy was right, Captain America: Civil War is just the usual Hollywood popcorn film with a mediocre plot and some nice action scenes.

Actually. You can't tell other people's opinions are wrong. They just are. You can either agree, or disagree. Facts are wrong or right.
You just agree with the guy who didn't think The Godfather was better than Captain America: Civil War.
Actually. You can't tell other people's opinions are wrong.
The argument I had wasn't exactly that. Well, at least not from my side. It was what I couldn't get the other guy to understand. He could not accept that anyone could seriously consider a Marvel film to be better than The Godfather. My point was, they are attempting to do different things. I wouldn't rate The Godfather on how much it makes me laugh, because it's not a comedy. If a comedy makes me laugh, and I consider it to be the best comedy of all time, then to me it's better than The Godfather, which is not on my top list of Gangster films, and probably not in my top 100 dramas. Some people consider all dramas to be better than all action films, because one is "art" and the other is "entertainment". That is objectively wrong.
@alltimemarr I checked Daglight and added to my watchlist, the plot sounds like something I could like, I will see later if I can find it somewhere to watch.

Oh, I watched my fair share of historical movies, but now my time is tight and honestly, if you need to go into past to find good story and you can't work with current reality, then I am not interested, because I live now, not in past. I find this is very common especially in European cinema always go into past, like there is nothing to say about present. For instance I find Lilja 4ever much stronger movie than all those acclaimed movies about Jews suffering in WW2 (already sick of this theme used over and over and over and...) or let's say Jagten, that would be in my TOP10, maybe actually TOP5 all time movies, I can't think about movie I would see in last 10 years which would make me more angry, literally shouting in my apartment from anger like WTF. I think furthest I am willing go are Lives of the others, which is like 70s or 80s or Baader Meinhof Komplex, that was nice movie as well, not that far into past or Munich.
Lek has pretty bad rating here at TMDb, though decent 7 at IMDb, is it worth watching if I could find it? I mean if it's really good movie, no matter what country (just maybe day before yesterday I watched Who Am I and was quite disapointed). As for Minoes, ain't fan of fairy tales. De Marathon sounds OK, added to watchlist. Recently I was laughing also at God lives in Bruxelles, at least first half, then it got quite repetetive and went downhill, but beginning was very amusing and highly recommended.

Well, I agree that there are WAY too many European movies about WWII, but I don't agree with that statement. Some stories are just timeless. Karakter, for example, is based on a book from the 30s, but it still works. I wouldn't really call the other two movies just historical. De Aanslag starts in WWII, but then follows the main character's life until the 80s. De Tweeling switches between past and present. It may not be everybody's cup of tea, you have to appreciate the sisters's relationship being an allegory of the relationship between Germany and The Netherlands. And it may be a bit sentimental, but being a twin myself, the story really gets to me. And it's one of the more balanced European WWII movies I've seen.

It's been years since I saw that movie on television. I honestly don't remember if it was a "really good" movie. But by Dutch standards at the time, I do remember being rather impressed at the effort to make a Dutch crime thriller. I hadn't seen many of those. I believe you can watch some scenes, including the intro, on Youtube. Without subtitles, though

Well, it was cute. And still watchable for adults. Kind of like a fairy tale. Probably the best Dutch family film.

Its not Godfather, or Goodfellas, or Casino, Carlitos way or even Scarface. Once Upon a Time in America is the best gangster movie.
