If impossibly fabulous stunts are all that you want out a summer movie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout would be a dream come true for action junkies. Hell, it still is, despite a convoluted plot that makes this mission virtually impossible to follow. At 56, and so not looking it, Tom Cruise is back as IMF (Impossible Mission Force) undercover agent Ethan Hunt – and in the running, jumping, climbing, diving, flipping, fighting shape of his life. And as the last few M:I movies, that’s Cruise putting his ass on the line;

The basic setup: Three spheres of plutonium are missing, which means the end of the world – it always does – if the contraband gets into the wrong hands.

No one seems trustworthy, except for Ethan’s crew: tech wiz Benji (the invaluable Simon Pegg) and bomb specialist Luther (a rock-steady Ving Rhames). It’s the latter who almost blows the operation, since our hero opts to rescue him instead of the plutonium. We now have a theme: Is saving one life more important than saving the lives of millions?

Also: There’s fresh blood on the scene. Henry Cavill, … brings unexpected twists to the role of Walker, a CIA agent assigned to watch Ethan’s every move. And best of all, there’s Vanessa Kirby ... as the White Widow, a knife-wielding femme fatale with a gift for arms dealing and an eye for Ethan. Except he’s still hung up on his ex-wife (Michelle Monaghan), …

There’s really no excuse for padding a two-and-a-half hour film with so much needless exposition. But you bear with it, because the set pieces are so off-the-charts spectacular. There’s Cruise, clearly having the time of his life, leaping over those London rooftops, putting pedal to the metal through the death-curves of Paris streets, duking it out with goons in a nightclub bathroom, skydiving out of transport plane at 25,000 feet in a lightning storm or piloting a chopper out of a death spiral that makes IMAX the preferred way to see this movie. There’s a rumor that Fallout may be the last big-screen Mission: Impossible we get. If so, then at least Cruise – who started this series of super-sized, adrenaline-fueled blockbusters 22 years ago – is going out in a blaze of glory.

As the headline states, I believe Mission: Impossible is the best film franchise of the last 20 years.

Where did this affection come from? Each entry in the series has basically the same plot, and, at a glance, they’re inseparable from any other generic popcorn action movie. But on closer inspection, it’s clear that there is nothing else like the Mission: Impossibles in the cinematic landscape.

The only comparable peer group for Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible movies would be the old-school movie franchises that were built around a central star—the Rocky series with Sylvester Stallone, the Indiana Jones movies with Harrison Ford, and the the Die Hard movies with Bruce Willis. Of those, the Mission: Impossible movies may not be the best, but it is the best of the last quarter century and continues to find new peaks after 22 years, with the three most recent entries earning the highest scores from critics in the series, which can’t be said for the others mentioned.

Arguably the most unique quality of the Mission movies is Cruise himself, who famously performs his own increasingly elaborate stunts.

Cruise is skilled at what he does, including as the series producer. Five of the six entries in the series have a different director, each of whom brought their own unique stylistic approach.

The result is that each entry in the series feels uniquely independent from the others, even though they all have basically the same plot with the same main character, further contributing to the overall uniqueness of the franchise.

It wasn’t that long ago that it’d be impossible to imagine the Mission: Impossible movies still going with Cruise at the center. In 2006, the relatively disappointing critical and commercial success for J.J. Abrams’ Mission: Impossible III seemed to confirm that Cruise’s time as a movie star was finished. The movie followed a year of ridicule for Cruise after he jumped on Oprah’s couch, got accused of having an episode of South Park pulled for making fun of him and Scientology , and generally got perceived by the public as an insane person. It’s lucky for Cruise’s career that all of that came at a time just before Twitter had the ability to really make these draggings stick.

2011’s Ghost Protocol was the turning point for the series. That movie, one of the best action movies of the last 20 years, is a kinetic spectacle of set-pieces, and though it helps knowing “that’s really Tom Cruise doing that” while rolling around the outside of the Burj Khalifa.

Ultimately, what these movies are about is that Tom Cruise is the Michael Jordan of running on-screen. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind Mission: Impossible 7 being just 90 minutes of Tom Cruise running in various locations. No dialogue. Just the "Mission: Impossible Theme," which changes based on the location of where he‘s running,

New to the series but no less important is Henry Cavill’s covert CIA operative August Walker, whose thick, immaculately-groomed moustache adds a layer of ambiguity and masculinity that makes him the perfect foil for Cruise/Hunt. It’s a small but vital character detail, a cunning subversion of the Superman actor’s clean-cut image. You may recall that this seemingly innocuous piece of facial foliage was a point of fierce contention in movieland last year. Well, even Justice League’s beleaguered VFX team would be hard-pressed to deny that it was worth all the fuzz.

The Burj Khalifa bit in 2011’s Ghost Protocol, for instance, is arguably the sole standout moment in an otherwise flat and largely forgettable blockbuster. Maybe not the only scene in the entire film to set your pulse racing, but probably the only one you actually remember. This is where Fallout eclipses its predecessors. For the first time in a long time, we have a Mission: Impossible film in which story and character are prized as highly as high-wire pyrotechnics.

Though, if for whatever reason the franchise does end here, with Cruise sucking in a lungful of crisp glacier air after yet another last-gasp save, it will have been one heck of a send off. It’s taken two decades, five sequels and countless voided insurance policies, but Cruise’s unwavering commitment has paid off in a big way. The suffering is over now. Finally, he has found peace.

Debuting in a massive 4,386 theaters, Paramount's release of Mission: Impossible - Fallout will be the widest release of the six-film franchise (and seventh widest release of all-time), topping the 4,054 theaters Mission: Impossible III opened in back in 2006. Within those theaters, the film will be shown in 3D as well as 2D and IMAX theaters, the first time the franchise has ever been released in all three formats and it appears audiences are ready to eat it up.

Online ticket retailer Fandango.com reports Fallout is not only outpacing all previous Mission films at the same point in the sales cycle, but also Jason Bourne, which debuted with $59.2 million in 2016 and we're seeing similar results when looking at IMDb page view data.

Fallout is outpacing Jason Bourne when looking at IMDb page view data over the two weeks leading up to release. It's also pacing ahead of Fox's 2013 release of The Wolverine ($53.1m opening), Star Trek Beyond ($59.25m opening) and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation ($55.5m opening).

While Paramount suggests they are looking for an opening in the $50 million range, the trends we're looking at clearly suggest a debut much higher than that, to the point we're expecting a debut topping Mission: Impossible II's franchise-best, $57.8 million opening back in 2000. Our weekend forecast is for a debut at or above $65 million, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it climb even higher, if not managing to near $75 million. Should the film top $65.5 million we'd be looking at the largest opening for a Paramount title since Transformers: Age of Extinction debuted with $100 million back in June 2014. On top of that, anything over the $64.8 million War of the Worlds opened with in 2005 would make for the largest opening ever for Tom Cruise*.

For the real fans of Tom Cruise, however, “Mission: Impossible - Fallout” is the best kind of riot, offering a convoluted, nearly inscrutable plot laden with twists, mistaken identities, cliff climbing, roof hopping, reckless motorcycle riding, angry man punching and non-stop Tom Cruise Tom Cruising.

Cruise’s devotion to authentically executing nutty physical feats effectively blurs the line between his character and his mythic Hollywood persona. Ethan Hunt’s job as a covert operative requires he be a gifted actor; Tom Cruise’s job playing Ethan Hunt demands he be a boulder-scaling, copter crashing, T-shirt-wearing, madman. Where’s the line? Who’s wearing the mask?!

Like many of Cruise’s recent films, “Mission Impossible: Fallout” is an excuse to watch Hollywood’s most freakishly alluring energizer bunny do what he does best. Fortunately, there isn’t a single scene in the film where our special guy isn’t front and center. Even a romantic lead would distract too much from his glory, get in the way of the audience’s emotional connection with the industry’s most eager human sacrifice.
