Discuss Henry Cavill

A thread for MI6.

While discussing the sixth film in the franchise, "Mission: Impossible — Fallout," at CinemaCon on Wednesday, Cruise detailed one of the film's action sequences, in which Cruise's Ethan Hunt jumps from a plane at nearly 30,000 feet to catch Henry Cavill's free-falling character.

To get the three shots that he and director Christopher McQuarrie (who returns after directing "Mission Impossible — Rogue Nation") wanted, Cruise jumped out of a C-17 plane 106 times.

This weekend saw Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout top the weekend box office with the franchise's largest three-day opening as well as star Tom Cruise's second largest opening of his career.

With an estimated $61.5 million, Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout fell a bit shy of Mojo's pre-weekend expectations, but still managed to deliver the franchise's largest three-day opening, topping the $57.8 million opening for Mission: Impossible II back in 2000. The opening also represents the second largest debut for Tom Cruise after the $64.8 million debut for War of the Worlds in 2005 and for Paramount this is the studio's largest opening since 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ($65.5m). Given the film's position as the last major blockbuster of summer 2018 and the positive reaction from both audiences and critics, Fallout should exhibit strong legs looking ahead.

Fallout not only carried the best reviews of the franchise (97% on RottenTomatoes and an 86 on Metacritic), but opening day audiences gave the film a franchise-best "A" CinemaScore. The film played to an audience that was 55% male, which is much more balanced when compared to the 62% for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Mission: Impossible - Falloutbrought in an estimated $23 millionfor Friday (including $6 million from Thursday night previews). This is $3 million an improvement on the opening day for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, which brought in $4 million from preview screenings and went on to open with $55.5 million. Falloutreceived an "A" CinemaScorefrom opening day audiences, the best CinemaScore grade in the franchise. Current expectation is for a three-day weekend in the range of $58-60 million.

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Exploding out of the gates, Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallouttook in $6 millionduring Thursday previews in ~3,300 theaters. The result is $2 million ahead of the $4 million Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nationbrought in ahead of a $55.5 million opening and ahead of the $4.23 million in previews for Jason Bourneahead of a $59.2 million opening in July 2016. All good signs as the film attempts to not only deliver the franchise's largest opening, but the largest opening for Tom Cruiseas well.

Yeah, let’s give him some cool titles for MI7. I think he should call it Mission: Impossible – Renegade. grin

I saw MI6 twice and I hated it both times. Awesome film. The film and everybody get an A+ from me, but I hated it. All I’m going to say for now is that Ethan Hunt captured Solomon Lane’s ugly butt in MI5 without hurting a hair on his head.

TOM Cruise was in hysterics during an interview with Alison Hammond today when she pulled a newspaper out of her bra.

Alison proudly whipped out the item, which was just a piece of newspaper with two eye holes cut out.

Tom was clearly taken aback but smiled as he said: "I didn't see that."

After looking at Alison's mask, the Mission: Impossible Fall Out star, said: "You know what, we are going to work on this.

"We're going to work on this a little bit," before he cracked up during the hilarious chat.

Screenrant

In the eight months since Justice League, the question of why Cavill even needed a mustache for the other movie has been raised, although now it seems quite obvious: he is the villain of Mission: Impossible - Fallout.

Cavill understood that a villain has to look the part, which is why he suggested to director Christopher McQuarrie that he grow the mustache. It's a devious decision, working for both Walker the stooge and Lark the mastermind, and while it's not plot-essential, it does help contrast him to the hero; his final showdown with Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt sees him become a disfigured force of anger and the mustache just adds to that.

While Fallout justifies why Cavill should have had a mustache in the first place, some may still question why Paramount reportedly refused Warner Bros. $3 million offer to let him shave replace it was CGI. Of course, Justice League itself proves how unreliable digital augmentation can be,

Walker had to have a mustache - the Justice League reshoots came about mid-way through Mission: Impossible's production, meaning that Cavill had already shot part with his natural hair

Had the situation arisen before Mission: Impossible - Fallout began shooting, then there's a greater argument for compromise, but in the situation as it was - with Cavill playing a villain in need of some menace, a substantial portion of his role in the can, and no obligation on the studio's part - Paramount made the right call. It elevated Mission: Impossible - Fallout, while it's not like Superman's face was the only reason Justice League struggled…

Vulture

So, Was Henry Cavill’s Mission:Impossible Mustache Worth It?

PRO: The mustache sits above a mouth that gets to utter Mission: Impossible – Fallout’s sole F-word, a high point.

CON: Still, by that standard, we must also penalize the mustache for the hackiest line to pass through Cavill’s lips, “Why won’t you just die?!”

Ultimately, we are forced to conclude that Henry Cavill’s mustache was a net gain not just for Mission: Impossible – Falloutbut for society as well. It may have turned Superman into a Polar Express character, but even a superhero must sometimes suffer for style.

NBC news

Tom Cruise is still out here defying the laws of time and space — and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” proves it.

Born in 1962, Cruise is 56 years old. He doesn’t look it, however, as his face seems eternally frozen at 39 ½. This phenomenon — impressive, if a little creepy— is made more obvious by the franchise’s only co-star to last all six movies, Ving Rhames. Rhames, who at 59 is three years Cruise’s senior, looks like a man who has grown too old for this stuff.

But if Cruise is the greatest thing about “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” he’s also its greatest weakness.

So while the franchise may have finally hit its stride, its star seems determined to play the lead until he dies. And no matter how good his training regimen (and medical team), the idea that Cruise will be able to keep doing this at 59 or 62 seems like its own mission impossible.

With a $178 million production budget and a promotional and distribution price tag that hovers around $150 million, sources close to the studio  and at rival companies estimate that the sixth installment in the spy franchise will need to pull in $560 million in order to get into the black.

However, there are also a lot of big names that will need to get their share of the spoils. Namely, producer J.J. Abrams and Cruise, both of whom get a sizable percentage of the grosses. Skydance, the film’s financier, will also be cut in on any money the picture makes. All these profit participants will limit Paramount’s taste of the riches. Of the major parties involved in “Mission: Impossible,” only Cruise has gross points, meaning he gets a percentage of the first monies received by the distributor.

Part of the reason that the “Mission: Impossible” films carry a hefty price tag is because they rely on stunts and effects that are filmed “in camera.”

That does have its drawbacks. One gnarly stunt resulted in the actor fracturing his ankle, causing production to shut down for eight weeks. Insiders say insurance covered that multi-million dollar cost.

Screen Rant: MI vs Bond

With the release of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Ethan Hunt’s has finally completed his mission to overtake James Bondas the best spy series in Hollywood.

It’s been 22 years since Ethan Hunt accepted his mission and the film industry has changed in major ways since then. The A-List model of stardom is on the wane, CGI dominates the blockbuster medium, and expanded universe franchises rule the roost, with particular focus on high-concept genre fare like Marvel, DC and Star Wars. It seems almost unfeasible that the Mission: Impossiblefilms would go from strength to strength, as its leading man gets older and audiences’ expectations for glossy Summer viewing increase.

The Ethan Hunt films have changed a lot since their inception albeit in less drastic ways. They’ve dropped all pretenses of sticking to the original source material, a move which is for the better, and they’ve placed less emphasis on the intricacies of plotting. The audiences care less about Ethan Hunt than they do Tom Cruise. As the franchise moved on, hiring directors like John Woo, J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird, Cruise took control of his franchise and distilled it to its essence: these are films about a major star doing major stunts, and that's what viewers want to see.

Both franchises have had to adapt to changing tastes or risk becoming irrelevant. By the time Daniel Craig took up the mantle, audiences had seen everything Bond could do and so the franchise went back to basics: darker, more rooted in realism, and very much of its time.

Everyone knows what to expect from these dueling franchises. Mission: Impossible will give you death-defying stunts and Tom Cruise at his most Tom Cruise-y; James Bond will give you high-class mystery, daring action and impeccable Britishness. Bond, in that sense, is far more rooted in a cultural consciousness than Ethan Hunt, because Bond is consistently held up as a British idol in a way Hunt isn’t with Americans.

That makes it harder for the Bond franchise to stray from its formula,… Mission: Impossible hasn’t had to worry so much… They can afford to tinker with their formula more dramatically.

Where this franchise fares stronger than Bond is in the freedom it has with its protagonist. Ethan Hunt is a cipher more than a definable character. You watch him and know you’re just watching Tom Cruise (and he has played the role in each film for over 22 years, whereas Bond refreshes itself regularly with a new actor). … By not caring all that much about the character, Cruise can do more with the films. Bond doesn’t have that luxury, for better or worse.

The problem with the Bond formula is that so much of it is rooted in ideas that simply don’t fly in 2018. Yet, for better or worse, that is his character, so how can you make that formula evolve beyond surface level changes and have it stick?

This was less of a problem for Mission: Impossible because those stakes exist almost exclusively to give Tom Cruise new opportunities for stunt work. That’s one of the reasons the series remains so fresh. It’s not just that these films let audiences see amazing stunts; it’s that they get to see amazing stunts done by Tom Cruise himself.

Mission: Impossible had a luxury the Bond films didn’t. These are films that can strip back their components and be unconcerned about things the Bond franchise has to care about. They have the option to essentially reboot the franchise every time they change actors, which can provide a refreshing change of pace but there’s only so many times you can do that... They also can’t tinker too much with the character of Bond himself. He can show growth, but it may not always carry over to the next film. Because multiple actors have played the role, there’s a sense of disposability around the character that Ethan Hunt doesn't have. Many actors have been Bond, but Tom Cruise will always be Ethan Hunt (and they're unlikely to recast Cruise).

Bond’s identity as a character and franchise is clearer than that of Ethan Hunt, but... it’s Mission: Impossiblethat has retained its core essence more than Bond. Here is a franchise that knows exactly what it is: a major movie star, big stunts, and high stakes... It’s not a franchise weighed down by its own history.

Tom Cruise has the kind of freedom most actors will never possess. That means he’s essentially able to do whatever he wants with the Mission: Impossiblemovies, and with the franchise... He does all those incredible stunts and the films go to great pains to remind you of that.

There will always be a place at the table for James Bond but it’s Ethan Hunt who has carved a path forward through fine-tuning the formula and understanding so keenly what audiences want. One can only hope that Bond can keep up with the frantic pace Mission: Impossiblehas set for the genre.

Mission: Impossible — Fallout Might've Ruined All Other Action Movies

Fallout is filled with moments like this, where it employs Cruise’s mania for stuntwork to achieve levels of immediacy, intensity, and clarity that make you feel like you took a big sucking whiff of pure oxygen.

Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout dipped just 13.4% as it enters its sixth weekend in release pulling in an estimated $7 million. The film is expected to deliver $9 million for the four-day weekend, pushing its domestic gross over $206 million.

Internationally is where the big story is when it comes to Fallout as the film added another $89.1 million overseas this weekend, thanks in large part to an estimated $77.3 million opening in China. The performance is 84% ahead of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation's Friday-Sunday debut* before it went on to bring in over $135 million in the market. At this point, Fallout has brought in nearly $443 million internationally for a global tally reaching $647 million.

Student Life

“Mission: Impossible—Fallout” is that rare and refreshing film that knows exactly what it is and what it wants to do: awe us. Make our jaws drop and eyes widen. Make us grip our armrests and sit on the edge of our seats. “Fallout” accomplishes that mission and then does more.

Honestly, the plot is…fine. It is frequently intelligent but nothing remarkable. The plot mainly functions to get the audience from one magnificent set piece to another.

“Ghost Protocol” had the stunning Burj Khalifa set piece. “Rogue Nation” had the breathtaking opera and underwater set pieces. By my (very subjective) count, “Fallout” raises the ante with four spectacular set pieces. None of these appear forced or gratuitous, and all of them build plot and character.

“Mission: Impossible—Fallout” is not a perfect film, but it is the collective effort of so many on and off camera performing at their absolute best.

Thoughtfully designed, intentionally shot and remarkably ambitious, “Mission: Impossible—Fallout” is a paragon for blockbuster filmmakers and consumers alike.

Just outside the top five is Mission: Impossible – Fallout [#6], which brought in an estimated $3.8 million, bringing its domestic cume to $212.1 million, just $3.3 million shy of topping Mission: Impossible II to become the highest grossing domestic release in the franchise. That said, with an estimated $38.6 million internationally this weekend, the film's global cume now totals $726.6 million making it the highest grossing worldwide release not only in the Mission franchise, but the highest grossing worldwide release in Tom Cruise's career.

2018 Worldwide Grosses List

MI6’s worldwide gross ($735,465,548) is number 5 on the list. It kicked Deadpool 2 ($734,166,479) to number 6, but it won’t kick Jurasic World ($1,302,846,935) from number 4.

2018 Domestic Grosses List

MI6’s domestic gross ($213,183,204) is number 8 on the list. It’ll kick Solo ($213,745,535) and Ant-Man 2 ($214,940,700), number 7 and 6 respectively, at the end of this week, but I doubt it’ll kick Deadpool 2 ($318,467,290) from number 5.

MI franchise fun facts. rofl

The team of Mission: Impossible III used False Nuns and Bikini Models as a Decoy Second Unit when the on-looking crowd did not allow them shoot in peace.

The team was shooting in Rome but the crowd would not allow the shooting go on as planned so they set another filming unit farther away from the primary set.
