Miles Teller is set to star opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to 1986 classic. 

The Whiplash star will play the son of Goose, Maverick (Cruise)'s former wingman and best friend, whose tragic death provided the emotional climax of the Tony Scott-directed original. 

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Teller beat out Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell, Dylan O'Brien, and Austin Butler for the role. 

The film will now envision Maverick as a mentor to the newest generation of fighter pilots, dealing with a world in which drone technology threatens to make their old style of flying obsolete. 

Top Gun: Maverick hits cinemas 12 July 2019.

 Laurence Fishburne has jumped ship from DC to Marvel as he now plays Dr. Bill Foster in this week's release of Ant-Man and the Wasp.

 "I don't think I'm still on call," Fishburne responded to questioning if he is still on call with DC to return as the editor of the Daily Planet. "I was unfortunately unable to go do some work on what turned out to be the Justice Leaguemovie. The DCEU officially rebranded “Worlds of DC”

This year at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), it seems as if, really truly free of Zack Snyder’s imprint, the DC movies are changing.

One thing is incredibly clear from this year’s showing at SDCC: DC movies are leaving behind the drab colors and dark atmospheres of most of the previous films. The first Aquaman trailer has dropped. Some of the CG looks a little shoddy, and who knows if the plot will come together, but there’s an unquestionable sense of adventure and wonder in it.

Secondly, there’s the Shazam! trailer, which really drives the point home. It’s fun, and it’s funny. It’s Big, if Big involved superpowers:

There is another element to this rebranding, and while it may come as a welcome way to drop the baggage of previous movies, it potentially kills the hope of a connected DC Universe. At this year’s SDCC, the DCEU, the DC movie universe was officially rebranded “Worlds of DC.” The intent of that name change being that unlike Marvel, where every movie is in a deeply connected universe, DC movies, which in the last two years certainly started out that way, may be moving as far away from it as possible.

On the plus side, this allows any baggage or complex continuities to be more or less thrown away.

However, it does also kill the dream of some thread of continuity like the Marvel movies do have.

Maybe the continuity will continue in some form, but from the looks of this year’s showing at SDCC, the DCEU as we know it is dead and this new unconnected “Worlds of DC” will be how the movies proceed for the foreseeable future.

Shazam’s suit looks padded, but the director tweeted that the vfx in the trailer is not final. The same must be the case for Aquaman.

None of the vfx in this early trailer are final so things might look quite different in the final film. That’s definitely a shot that will continue to be tweaked.

 A recent production listing on Production Weekly has revealed that Snyder is reportedly a producer of The Flashproject along with other names such as Alex Gartner, Dan Mazer, Richard Suckle, Deborah Snyder, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Jon Berg and Denise Di Novi also included.

 The Flash movie is currently in the hands of John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein. The Duo were the writers for Spider-Man: Homecoming & have also directed comedic movies such as Vacation and the recent Game Night.

 Though the duo have already worked on a comic book movie, it still wouldn’t be a smart decision to let them handle a prominent DC film title such as The Flash in a way a Marvel movie is made. Certainly, comedic elements alone aren’t enough for The Flash movie, especially if it stills plans on adapting the Flashpoint event.

 Since Snyder is the person to thank for the casting of Ezra Miller and setting off The Flash’s arc with Justice League, he would be a vital person on board the project to discuss creative decisions.

Franco worked on Suicide Squad, and apparently one of the shots he reworked took place after the Squad has defeated Incubus. In the shot, El Diablo is seen standing with the other members of the Suicide Squad - with a comparative shot revealing the altered scene where El Diablo had been removed.

Who would win?

 During Comic-Con International in San Diego, both Shazam actor, Zachary Levi, and Superman actor, Henry Cavill, made their picks as to who would win a fight between the two heroes and one of their answers was actually pretty surprising!

Levi, unsurprisingly, went with his own character, stating in an interview, where he was surrounded by his Shazamco-stars, Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer, as well as the director of the film, David F. Sandberg, “Shazam is magic. So I think we’re team Shazam.”

 Cavill, though, surprisingly seemed generally to agree with Levi when asked about the question, as well. He explained, “Shazam’s got magic, which is allegedly — comic book lore-wise — Superman’s weakness, or he’s at least more vulnerable to it than other things. Superman isn’t going to just be beating up Shazam. He’s not. And Shazam is basically just a big kid. So he’s not going to be beating up Superman. He’s a huge fan of Superman, for one. But Supes is seriously quick. I think it’s whoever gets the jump on the other. It’s situational.”

 In an interview with ComicBook.com, Levi spoke about some characters he would like to see Shazam go up against. Two of those characters are Henry Cavill's Superman and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam.

"I would love for Shazam and Black Adam to go head to head, I would love that. And I would love for like Shazam and Superman to go head to head because in the comic books those have been some iconic fights. You know there's so many cool things we could with the character, but one movie at a time, I'm just so stoked that we're here right now. That we made the movie, we got through that winter in Toronto. These talented young fools are just going to continue to take over the world and I'm just going to hang onto their coattails."

 Warner Bros. released the first trailer for Shazam!during San Diego Comic-Con, which gave fans a good look at the movie's story and setting, as well as Shazam's origin. Although many already found the trailer impressive, director David F. Sandberg let fans know that the trailer's CGI was not indicativeof the final CGI for the movie.

Some DC Comics fans are already disappointed by the lack of Black Adam in the film, so Levi's comments are right in line with what fans would like to see. One can only hope that DC and Warner Bros. pay attention to these remarks because a Shazam battle with Superman or Black Adam would undoubtedly offer something highly entertaining.

Is it a good idea to have TC as Hal Jordan?

Tom Cruise is reportedly being lined up to play the lead Green Lantern in the forthcoming Warner Bros. / DC Comics film Green Lantern Corps.

The movie, which is projected for release in 2020, is set to be a live-action reboot, with previous reports having linked The Lone Ranger and Call Me By Your Name star Armie Hammer with the role of Hal Jordan / Green Lantern.

The report also claims that Cruise has said that he’ll only sign on to do Green Lantern Corps if one major part of the film’s script is changed – the part which sees his Green Lantern character being killed off.

Cruise’s frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie – who has written and directed two Mission: Impossible films and Jack Reacher – has also been linked with the DC project in recent months.
