Zack Snyder Reveals Plans for Justice League Theatrical Screenings

"They have given me a handful of charity screenings in IMAX," Snyder revealed to Cinema Blend's ReelBlend podcast. "So as we go forward, I'm going to do a handful of charity screenings -- a couple in color, a couple in black and white -- and that's my plan. As we head toward the fall, with the Nerd Queens, we really want to do Zack Con Two, or Snyder Con Two. The idea there would be to do an IMAX weekend where we would do Man of Steel, BvS and Justice League as sort of a three-day event and try and get as many of the people who made the movie and the cast and whoever will help us out as a huge charity event. A huge kind of fan gathering with cosplay and the whole... like a real celebration of the whole thing."

As Snyder previously said, any theatrical exhibition of his cut of Justice League would come with an intermission, it's a movie that's over four hours with credits after all.

I’ll give it a 7 out of 10.

I’ll give it a 5 out of 10.

That sounds good.

That’s not the only weird thing. The Mother Boxes (MB) tell Steppenwolf to come to Earth, because SM has died. But SM arrived on Earth in 1983.

I hate to disappoint you, Blue, but SM didn’t arrive on Earth the same year HC was born. HC’s not secretly an alien playing an alien in a film. Being super hot is not a super power. joy

Anyway, why is Steppenwolf afraid of Kryptonians? They’re as weak as humans on Krypton or in Krypton’s atmospheric in the Kryptonian ship. The ones that arrived in the scout ship didn’t show their powers. So the New Gods heard about the battle between SM and Zod? I thought WW said Earth is anonymous among trillion worlds or something. One of you geeks help me out here.

The MB’s are hundreds of years old.

The MB’s are thousands of years old.

Darkseid doesn’t look like he gets defeated often. He must remember which planet was strong enough to defeat him.

WW tells BM that Earth is the only planet that Darkseid lost.

That being said, hallelujah, there’s no Martha moment in ZSJL. One moment came close, though. I say close because I want to hear what others and Snyder have to say. Maybe I’ve missed something. thinking

You missed the part where WW tells BM that Earth is anonymous among trillion worlds… and ZS’ explanation. After four hours, he’s still explaining. rolling_eyes

ZS: He almost died when he returned to apocalypse he was in a fight for power and much time passed before he was in a position of power again and by then all who had been with him had been Slayed.

Here we go again. There’s a lot wrong with the battle between Darkseid and Earth’s defenders.

Darkseid arrives, but he doesn’t attack. He waits for Earth’s defenders to assemble. They’re people on horses and old ships. Do they all live near the place where Darkseid arrived? Unlikely.

Why didn’t Darkseid send the parademonds to clean up Earth for his arrival? This time, he tells Steppenwolf he’ll come when Earth is scorched.

No, Darkseid chooses to join the parademonds and he let the nine Mistresses come down with the MB’s too. So he created a situation where he has to protect the Mistresses and the MB’s instead of simply go on a killing spree.

Steppenwolf says that Darkseid had been looking for the most powerful weapon in the multiverse… the ALE. Then he found it on Earth. So the search should stop. All focus should be on Earth.

Once in the mothership in space, there is no more threat. Darkseid killed the GL that could fly into space. So the ships could hoover around Earth. You can’t leave the MB’s and the ALE behind. Is Darkseid the only one with brains on those ships?

If Darkseid needed urgent medical attention, only his mothership could have left. Again, you can’t leave the MB’s and the ALE. Or at least write the location down. There’s nothing else to look for because you have the ALE.

Can’t help you with that. I aint no geek and I have my own problems with this thing.

If Ares could injured Darkseid with his ax, then WW and AM can kill him with a sword or trident. He doesn’t wear an armor like Steppenwolf that only SM can break. I think that WW’s story should have had Steppenwolf in it. He lost Earth and the MB’s and that’s why he can’t go home. But now the villain of the sequel almost got killed by Ares who later gets killed by WW. The version of me on Earth-2 that likes ZS films don’t see any reason to be thrilled to see the sequel. Darkseid is weak. A freaking ax can kill him. Upgrade the villains, ZS. Don’t downgrade them.

ZS explaines why SM chose the black suit too. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. lol

“The black suit, you can say that in modern Krypton, when he left, everyone was wearing black suits,” he told I Minutemen. “So it is sort of linked to, in some ways, the old world. I think is a more direct relationship to his family.”
“In a lot of ways, the blue suit, to me, represents his kind of place on Earth,” he continued. “The blue suit is his suit of a hero, the suit of his destiny, whereas the black suit is more personal in a lot of ways, more about his family. One is outward, and one is inward.”

SM finds the suits in a 20,000 yo scout ship. It shouldn’t have what modern Krypton wears. And was the crew aware that black can be used to accelerate healing under the yellow sun? And it’s a very big coincidence that the suits have the symbol of hope which is also SM’s family crest. A national symbol shouldn’t be a family crest. It’s confusing. You’ll think that the El family is linked to everything with the hope symbol on them. lol

Godzilla vs. Kong Negative Reviews From Snyder Fans Removed By IMDb

After the announcement that there are no further plans to continue Snyder's DC cinematic universe after the release of his cut of Justice League, a handful of upset fans flocked to IMDb to review bomb Godzilla vs. Kong. The move was done in retaliation against Warner Bros., which oversees the DCEU and would be the ultimate decision maker when it comes to moving forward with Snyder's version of the cinematic universe. The process of review bombing involves multiple people giving a project the lowest possible score in order to bring its overall rating significantly down. Presumably, the goal would be to dissuade potential movie-goers from seeing Godzilla vs. Kong due to the low rating and hurt Warner Bros.' bottom line.

However, Snyderverse fans' plans seem to have failed, as IMDb removed all the review-bombed scores of Godzilla vs. Kong. Before the purge, there were 44 1-star reviews of the film - with thirty-three of the reviews citing Warner Bros.' refusal to continue Snyder's version of the DCEU as the reason for the negative reviews. As of the writing of this article, there are only nine 1-star reviews, with each directly referencing some aspect of Godzilla vs. Kong as the reason for the score.

Interestingly, Godzilla vs. Kong's early reactions seem to be a bit more favorable than Legendary's previous outings with the iconic monster.

Snyder's version of Justice League has been nearly unanimously appraised as being better than the Joss Whedon-helmed theatrical cut. The new version of the film does set up many storylines that, in all likelihood, will never receive any payoff. That is, understandably, frustrating for those who really enjoyed Snyder's version.

Good that you mention that.

ZS’ trying to give this a deeper meaning. Just say you did it because the black suit is cool. That outward and inward stuff doesn’t make sense, IMO.

Beside the fact that what modern Kryptonians wear can’t be on a 20,000 yo scout ship, the black suit is associated with bad things too. Zod and his minions all wore black. They came to destroy and kill. SM sees his real dad in black, too, and probably assumes that black was the color wore around the time that Krypton imploded. So it’d have made sense if SM had worn the black suit first.

SM was bullied and an outcast. He never fit in. He was kind of lost, searching for who he is. So it’s understandable that he wants to be close to his family, wear the color and the crest. Feel like he's not alone. The black color could also mean mourning the loss of his family and planet.

But then SM finds out what kind of people Kryptonians are and he chooses humans and Earth. He fights for Earth. He even tells Zod that Krypton had it’s chance. And then he dies for Earth in BvS. It’s only fitting that he chooses the blue suit after being resurrected. He breaks all ties with Krypton and his biological parents when he’s “reborn” on Earth. He tells LL he got a second chance and will not waste it. So it’s time to wear a happier color and move forward.

How much time does ZS need to get this crap right? He wasted time on meaningless scenes in slow-mo while he could have included a scene that showed why Darkseid doesn't remember.

Snyder's version of Justice League has been nearly unanimously appraised as being better than the Joss Whedon-helmed theatrical cut.

Yes, ZSJL is better than JWJL. But is ZSJL a good film? How many times does this have to be repeated? JW had two months to rewrite and reshoot the work of a director with a completely different style. He had to turn something long, dark and humorless into something short, light and fun. ZS had years and he still can’t get it right. Now he’s being rewarded high scores because his long-winded film is better than JW. Also, WB is depicted as the villain that took away the project of a grieving director and gave it to a perv. I can understand why WB is pissed. Articles only write that the director left because of a tragedy. They rarely mention the battle to make it short that happened before that.

The new version of the film does set up many storylines that, in all likelihood, will never receive any payoff. That is, understandably, frustrating for those who really enjoyed Snyder's version.

Blame ZS. He created this situation, not WB. He was given the opportunity to finish his unfinished JL, not to continue his whole vision. He knew that. Setting up many storylines was wrong.

I guess ZS forgot the 20,000 year part. He also forgot that AM has his mom’s trident in BvS. He has it in the little vid that BM stole from Lex. But Nuidis Vulko gives it to him in ZSJL.

John Stewart Was Pitched But Warner Shut It Down

[…] Snyder originally wanted to use Green Lantern in the film. Remember when the film was first being shot, there was a slogan called #UniteTheSeven. Green Lantern was that seventh member who just didn't make the cut. Snyder threatened to quit after Warner Bros. said no, seemingly because they wanted to introduce the hero themselves. The last time Warner did that, they gave us Ryan Reynolds's Hal Jordan. (Yuck.)
This time around, Snyder wanted to use the Black Green Lantern, John Stewart. John was a key member of the Justice League in the popular animated series. However, the Black Green Lantern was scrapped before he could even get cast. Luckily, we got Harry Lennix as the Martian Manhunter instead. We appreciate the effort, Zack!

That would have been cool. MM looks awesome too, but it should have been a whole new character. Swanwick shouldn’t be MM. The new MM should have come to Earth to warn JL that word around Orion is that Darkseid is coming for the ALE.

Now that Snyder's vision has been shared, it's apparent that Whedon cut out almost all characters of color.

I don’t like JW, but I’d have cut most of those scenes too. JW rewrote ZSJL and many of those scenes didn’t fit in JWJL. I won’t rewrite ZSJL. I’ll cut them because they’re not necessary.

  1. Cut the whole scene of Fl with Iris and the job.
  2. The Themyscira scenes will be reduced. Is a JL film, not a film about how Amazons do battle and their rituals. The Atlanteans didn’t get so much time.
  3. Ryan Choi will be seen only once to use the laser to heat the MB.
  4. MK will talk to LL. If MK doesn’t have money to go to LL, she’ll call her. MM will appear after the credit.
  5. Cb’s backstory will be reduced. The other JL members didn’t have an extended backstory either.
  6. Cb’s mom will be seen at the football game and when they have the accident. She won’t talk to the principle. Cb’s father will keep most of his scenes.
  7. Cb won’t follow the waitress.

If it’s any consolation, I’d have cut WW’s hostage scene and tea with Alfred. I’d have cut AM saving the sinking boat and women singing. Is a JL film. Single members won’t save anything on their own. ZS could include a little more about Apokolips, though. A scene where DeSaad reminds Darkseid how he lost Earth among a trillion worlds.

Was ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ a Hit for HBO Max? Here’s What the Data Says.

WarnerMedia is sacrificing an estimated $1.2 billion in revenue by moving its 2021 theatrical film slate to a day-and-date release on HBO Max, per Variety. According to Stratechery, HBO Max generates a monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) of $12, which equates to $144 in annual ARPU. So to cover the estimated $1.2 billion in lost theatrical film revenue in 2021, HBO Max would likely need to add around 8.3 million new subscribers.

WarnerMedia originally projected between 75 million to 90 million subscribers by 2025. Earlier this month, the company increased its projection to 120 million to 150 million, suggesting internal confidence in the product.

We’ve collected all the third-party analytics data we could to better understand the new Justice League‘s success or failure. But remember, each dataset has its own unique pros and cons as a viewership and demand indicator. Without any first-hand revelations from WarnerMedia, our goal is collect information from several sources to see if a consistent, illuminating trend emerges.

ANTENNA

Can tell when people signed-up, when they cancelled, when they switched services, and so on. It’s not a picture of ratings viewership, but it does provide clarity into how successful a piece of content is in attracting new customers to an SVOD service.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League drove a 2.3x increase in HBO Max sign-ups (March 18-March 21) compared to the previous four Thursday-Sunday periods. In the Snyder Cut’s opening weekend (March 19-21), HBO Max earned more sign-ups than during the opening weekends of The Little Things, Judas & The Black Messiah and Tom & Jerry but less than Wonder Woman 1984.

The most important element to focus on in the streaming wars is churn. How many of these new customers will remain subscribed

Wonder Woman 1984 boasted a solid holdover rate following its successful release.

Apptopia

App analytics company Apptopia estimates mobile-app performance metrics, which include downloads, in-app purchase revenue, and daily active users. They do not, however, estimate viewership and their numbers only extend to mobile devices and do not include consoles, TVs and Smart TVs. It’s also important to note that downloads do not automatically equate to new subscriptions or a view and the bulk of users are likely not watching full films on their phones. Instead, Apptopia can help provide a small measure of HBO Max’s potential app growth.

HBO Max saw 1.48 million mobile app downloads for the week ending on March 28. This marks a 64% increase from the week before Zack Snyder’s Justice League arrived on the platform. For comparison, Disney+ accrued 831,000 new app downloads for the week of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s second episode

The app analytics company also determined that HBO Max enjoyed the second-largest engagement in mobile-app streaming for the week ending on March 28. Specifically, the HBO Max app was opened 119.1 million times in that frame, per Apptopia, second only to Netflix’s 838.8 million. Disney+ drew 69.7 million app opens during the same span. Again, however, app downloads do not automatically equate to subscription activations.

Reelgood

For its comparison, Reelgood included all “superhero” movies and TV shows that premiered on any SVOD platform between Oct. 2020 and Mar. 2021. The data shows these were the top four in terms of streaming and engagement share among Reelgood’s U.S. users (the service boasts upwards of 2 million U.S. users):

Specifically, the opening weekend shares of streaming and engagement broke down as follows:

  1. 7% – WandaVision (S1E1)
  2. 5% – Zack Snyder’s Justice League
  3. 4% – Wonder Woman 1984
  4. 4% – The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (S1E1)

TV Time

A view – an app user who has tracked a title

Zack Snyder’s Justice League was the most-watched movie in the U.S (7.6% viewshare among ALL movie titles both new release and library) during its release weekend (March 18-21).

When compared to other HBO Max movies, audience demand for the Snyder Cut was 35% higher than Wonder Woman 1984 at 3 days post-release, per TV Time. The film is also garnering more interest than Godzilla vs. Kong (March 31) or Mortal Kombat (April 16), in terms of the volume of followers tracking each project on the TV Time app.

Samba TV

Watched at least five minutes premier weekend (Friday-Sunday)

  1. 2.4 million – Soul (Disney+)
  2. 2.2 million – Wonder Woman 1984 (HBO Max)
  3. 1.8 million – Zack Snyder’s Justice League (HBO Max)
  4. 1.7 million – The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (Disney+)
  5. 1.6 million – WandaVision (Disney+)
  6. 1.4 million – The Little Things (HBO Max)
  7. 1.2 million – Tom & Jerry (HBO Max)
  8. 1.1 million – Mulan (Disney+)

When Samba TV went back to calculate the completion rate for the four-hour film, they found only 1/3 of households (600,000) watched the movie in its entirety from March 19-21.

In Justice League‘s first week (March 18-24), 2.2 million U.S. households watched at least five minutes, per Samba TV’s numbers. This is behind the company’s one-week numbers for Wonder Woman 1984 (3 million), which also performed better post-opening weekend (800,000 households) as compared to the Snyder Cut (400,000). According to Samba TV’s full week report, only 36% of U.S. households (792,000) actually finished the four-hour film.

Google Trends

A glimpse at internet search traffic

Here, we can see that the peak of Justice League search traffic was comparable to Amazon Prime Video’s Coming 2 America, greater than Disney+’s Raya and the Last Dragon, but smaller than Pixar’s Soul and fellow Max blockbuster Wonder Woman 1984.

While Justice League boasts the highest high, it doesn’t yet have the sustained engagement tail as a WandaVision or Bridgerton. The decay in viewership for streaming movies is a very real phenomenon which also applies to the social conversation surrounding it.

HBO Max saw 1.48 million mobile app downloads for the week ending on March 28. This marks a 64% increase from the week before Zack Snyder’s Justice League arrived on the platform.

The app analytics company also determined that HBO Max enjoyed the second-largest engagement in mobile-app streaming for the week ending on March 28. Specifically, the HBO Max app was opened 119.1 million times in that frame, per Apptopia,

People who downloaded or subscribed on 03/18 could have done it to watch ZSJL, GvK and Mortal-K with only a month subscription. Why subscribe for just GvK or Mortal-K when you can also catch ZSJL when it’s released and be part of the hype?

By late June 2020, Fisher went public with his dissatisfaction at what he viewed as Warners' inaction. For their part, Warners sources contend that Fisher was being manipulated by Snyder, who hoped to reclaim control of the DC film universe.

Snyder denies any role in influencing Fisher.

I don’t think ZS is manipulating RF, but he instigates his fans to do his dirty work for him.

WB brags about GvS, but nothing about ZSJL.

HBO Max didn't release viewership numbers, but said the film has had a larger viewing audience in its first four days  than any other film or show since the launch of the streaming service.
The HBO Max audience has spoken very clearly and loudly: they love this film and are watching it more than once,” said Andy Forssell, exec vp and general manager of WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer.

Last year, ZSJL was HBOM’s biggest 2021 film. But the day-and-date release made it just another film.
