Debate The Big Bang Theory

This season has been pretty decent. But tonight’s episode may have been one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Why do people think bad singing and terrible songs are funny? Watching Howard and Raj sing is about as funny as a migraine.

If this had been the first episode I’d seen, it might have been my last.

If you enjoyed this, that’s fine. But I just don’t get what’s funny about butchered music.

To me having Bert sing about a boulder was the highlight of the episode. Is there a proper way to sing Filk music? Give me Footsteps on the Moon over any of those singing contest shows and their overbearing contestants. What was not funny was Sheldon getting a call from Mary then hanging up then calling her back then hanging up and calling her back again. The Leonard and Amy part was okay but done before and not much new about them. Penny's role was alright but again not much new about Penny walking in on nerd stuff. They really need to put Footsteps... in front of an appreciative audience. I will be in the front row . musical_note microphone2 musical_score musical_keyboard

Rock Show! Rock Show! Rock Show!

Ah, but Filk is not Rock. Bert would be doing the Rock show!

I agree that the music scenes were cringe-worthy. I wasn't sure why they resurrected the music group (sorry Z).

I enjoyed the Amy/Leonard and Sheldon/Penny scenes. I always do. I hate to say it since they're married to other people, but Amy and Leonard have chemistry!

It was a hilarious episode and bad singing is funny.

I liked the whole episode. Singing usually doesn't bother me and can sometimes be quite funny. Just the idea of them having a band, and then Bert joining them, was great.

I loved the episode when they all sang karaoke. The choice of songs and their performances were hilarious! The one time I found singing on the show annoying was Howard's song to Bernadette when she was quarantined. Everyone seemed to think it was so sweet, but it made me wince.

I found their songs beyond horrible. For smart people, their music sounds like it's authored by an 8 year old girl.

Again, if people find that funny - so be it. This stuff is purely subjective. But I find it to be low-brow humor, and I've come to expect more from this show and these writers. I hope it's the last we see of that type of episode. I just find pivoting back to them signing bad to be very lazy writing. It takes ZERO effort, because everyone can do something badly. It's the easiest thing to do. And I get it, the joke is they suck, and they don't know it. Ha Ha Ha. Barely amusing the first time, but every time Howard pulls out that keyboard, I want to change the channel. If it's a re-run, I absolutely FFwd through those scenes.

A very lazily written show. Pivoted back to plot points and jokes that aren't at all fresh. We've seen them sing bad. We've seen Sheldon struggle with String Theory and be unhappy with his career. We've seen them do old science experiments before. I'm hoping this is an exception, and not the rule going forward. I've enjoyed most of this season. But this entry was, imo, very weak.

Aren't their songs actually written by "Garfunkel and Oates?" That might explain it. Maybe not 8 years old, but definitely both girls.

Hey! Are you and censorship trying to claim that girls can't write good songs?! Why I oughta...! punch_tone2

Many girls can, and do. But from what I've seen/heard, not so much those two. I'm a huge fan of especially women musicians who write all or most of their own material, such as Heather Nova, Juliana Hatfield... And some others really put me off, such as Alanis Morissette who gets a lot of "female musician" cred but years ago I happened to see a bit of some awards show when the MAN who actually wrote her big deal hit "You Oughta Know" went up to get the trophy.

And actually, the Go Gos and the Bangles wrote a lot of their own songs too.

Heather Nova's entire album "Oyster" - still one of my all-time favorites - can be heard here:

"Truth And Bone" is one of my all-time favorite songs, but it's best when experienced as part of the album flow of "Oyster." And in a dark room with very high quality audio equipment and speakers. There's an amazing amount of musical detail that some equipment doesn't adequately reproduce. And which sadly some people aren't able to discern even with excellent equipment.

Huge fan of the Go-Gos, and the Bangles had some good songs too.

You mean Alanis didn't write You Oughta Know?! I'm crushed - that song is one of my favorites! I gotta look into this...!

ETA: Ok according to what I found, the song was co-written by Morissette and Glen Ballard. She states the song came from her subconcious, so I'm inclined to think she had a large hand in writing the lyrics. Interesting side note: I had no idea Flea and Dave Navarro played bass and guitar on the track!

Well, I don't think it was the "Subconscious Music Awards Show." And they only mentioned him.

I guess you started replying before I posted the url for the whole Oyster album, but definitely worth checking out if you can.

I also really enjoy Ivy, but that's a band not just her, and I think the songwriting is divided up and may not include her much at all. But she's still a fine singer!

To paraphrase Sam Seaborn from an episode of THE WEST WING...

I know many women that can write very good songs. I know women that can write music that can blow your doors off. This sounds like a girl.

That's another good way of putting it, at least for this show. I definitely haven't heard everything from "Garfunkel and Oates," but what I have heard, sounded like it was written by girls, not women.

I'm only familiar with "Pregnant Women are Smug" and "This Party Took a Turn for the Douche", both of which I find amusing. Their schtick is not highbrow, and I'm sure it's not meant to be. grin

And Garfunkel and Oates write comedy songs, they aren't meant to be Grammy winning material.
