Discuss The Big Bang Theory

This season has been pretty decent. But tonight’s episode may have been one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Why do people think bad singing and terrible songs are funny? Watching Howard and Raj sing is about as funny as a migraine.

If this had been the first episode I’d seen, it might have been my last.

If you enjoyed this, that’s fine. But I just don’t get what’s funny about butchered music.

That's another good way of putting it, at least for this show. I definitely haven't heard everything from "Garfunkel and Oates," but what I have heard, sounded like it was written by girls, not women.

I'm only familiar with "Pregnant Women are Smug" and "This Party Took a Turn for the Douche", both of which I find amusing. Their schtick is not highbrow, and I'm sure it's not meant to be. grin

And who could forget, "The loophole" and "Handjob, blandjob, I don't understand, job".

Well I never expected anything much from "Footprints On The Moon." Or any other kind of "filk" for that matter. And maybe part of the point of "Footprints..." at least, is that they ARE bad. Always. But for entertainment purposes on the show, it might be good to occasionally include something that wasn't produced by "Garfunkel and Oates," or otherwise sounds like a product of teen/tween girls.

Ah, but Filk is not Rock. Bert would be doing the Rock show!

Well the only Rock show that Bert would be doing would involve actual rocks.

Okay, those are bricks. But rocks could work too!

.... And some others really put me off, such as Alanis Morissette who gets a lot of "female musician" cred but years ago I happened to see a bit of some awards show when the MAN who actually wrote her big deal hit "You Oughta Know" went up to get the trophy.

You mean Alanis didn't write You Oughta Know?! I'm crushed - that song is one of my favorites! I gotta look into this...!

Settle down folks. Yes Alanis wrote the song with Glen Ballard, a top producer who wrote thousands of songs and worked with many top names. That is just one way pop songs come about, an artist works with or is paired with a professional songwriter or producer. Or records a song someone else wrote. I might say that a good deal of pop songs are not written by the people who perform them. In a romantic way a "song" comes from an "artist" but it is also a commercial product that is meant to reach large amounts of people who will pay money to buy it. From Tin Pan Alley, to the Brill building, to Motown, to Nashville, etc. Today if you look at song credits you might see 10 or more names attached to a song. Glenn Ballard, Dianne Warren, David Foster, Linda Perry (Sara Gilberts wife) are top names but there are a lot more behind the scenes people. Even Adele works with co-writers on songs. Her big hit "Someone like you" was co-written with Dan Wilson. Heck it takes a whole room of writers to come up with TBBT scripts.

Here is Glen Ballard talking abut working with Alanis https://youtu.be/YrCFoCWQL6E

Here is a young Alanis on the old Canadian kids show "You Can't Do That on Television" https://youtu.be/89J1O046wj8

And not to make you upset Gothish, but "Girls Just Wanna have Fun" was written by Robert Hazzard as a demo. He then waited for the right singer to come along to record it. https://youtu.be/6zeOag2fU3s

LOL, oh I'm not upset about "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", or many other songs which I know are not all written by the singers. But "You Oughta Know" is one of those songs that just sounds so personal and really struck a chord with me and many other scorned women of the time. That Alanis had a collaborator is just fine - it is still her story and came from her experience. It wasn't a case of a song that was already written that was then shopped around to different singers.

Actually Robert Hazzard agreed to let Cyndi Lauper tweak the lyrics to fit her perspective. Here is an interview

I don't mind it as long as the hilarity outweighs the unpleasantness of the poor singing. It's a common staple in sitcoms .

I think Raj and Howard happens to be more funny than bad.

Bert's was a little rougher than the guys'; and I'll admit that a little goes a long way; but we are not talking about sitting through a “Florence Foster Jenkins” concert here.

Bet, if you tied all the musical segments together you probably wouldn’t get a good minute.

Anyway, I'm always smile and waiting to hear what the lyrics are going to bring. So, for that reason I’m willing to put up with a smattering of caterwauling.

Love those labored-lyrics!

I think the reason I don't like the singing (at least when they perform it in public) is that it makes me feel sorry for them. They try so hard only to have eyes rolled at them.

I don't mind singing on TV shows if it's good, though. Give me the rerun of the Brady Bunch when they were competing for the silver platter and I'm a happy girl.
