Discuss Henry Cavill

Henry is contractually obligated to play Superman one more time.

Do you want Superman solo or in a team (i.e., MOS 2 or JL 2) and why?

HC should choose a different story, because this may remind people of what recently happened in Avengers Infinity War (AIW).

The future of the DC Extended Universe may lie in Aquaman’s hands, but Henry Cavill still has ideas for a sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel. Specifically, the brawny actor and self-proclaimed comic book fan says he wants a film based on the 2004 Supermanarc, For Tomorrow.

In Superman: For Tomorrow, ... a million people on Earth inexplicably disappear — including Lois Lane. As Superman tries to figure out just what in Rao’s name happened, Superman confides in a troubled priest who is in the midst of a crisis of faith.

For Tomorrow isn’t the best Superman story of all time, but it is one of the most profound. It stands as a compelling thought exercise in what it means to have faith in a universe where beings can fly, run at the speed of light, and even exist as literal “New Gods.”

Here he says that Brainiac would be good for MOS 2. But is Brainiac in For Tomorrow?

Speaking with Fandom while promoting Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Cavill confessed that Brainiac would be a good choice for Man of Steel 2.

Explaining why he chose Brainiac, Cavill said, “Brainiac’s a big threat. There’s a lot of fun. There’s a lot of storylines to him.”

After the success of Mission Impossible - Fallout, I think that Henry has finally shown that he can carry a Superman movie - if allowed to! The studios should take notice and give HC a full character with a decent script. There's no reason why they wouldn't go ahead with MOS 2.

He already carried MOS and made it the second highest grossing SM film. ZS's MOS did better than Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins.

The announcement of a Supergirl film is another sign of the shift at Warner Bros’ DC division as executive Walter Hamada guides the cinematic universeforward. With Batgirl, and several projects starring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in development, including Cathy Yan’s filmbased on the comic Birds of Prey, Warner Bros. is fully embracing the appeal and necessity of female superheroes, no doubt fueled by the success of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Womanin 2017. But a Supergirl film doesn’t just have the power to boost the cinematic power of DC’s leading women, it also has the potential to open up the world of Superman on film in a way that hasn’t been done before. Despite the fact that many are eagerly waiting for Warner Bros. to announce a new Superman solo film, a Supergirl film can keep the property alive, and hopefully feature Henry Cavill in some degree, while the studio figures out how to best reintroduce the character for a film of his own.

The seeds for Supergirl were planted, in 2013’s Man of Steel, when Clark Kent steps into the Kryptonian ship for the first time and discovers several pods, its inhabitants’ long deceased. But there’s one pod that’s open, the occupant seemingly escaped. For years, fans have speculated that this open pod was an Easter Egg pointing to the existence of Kara Zor-El, a theory given further credibility by the Man of Steel prequel comic written by Sterling Gates from a story by David S. Goyer, Geoff Johns, and Zack Snyder. That comic, Man of Steel Prequel, introduces Kara as a young pilot assigned to help Krypton’s expansion, and sees her crash-land on Earth long before the U.S. military discovers the scout ship that eventually provides Clark with the truth about his heritage. While it’s unlikely the tie-in comic will be used as fast and hard continuity, it may provide the basis for how Supergirl will be inducted into the cinematic universe.

OK, enough drooling. rofl Bad guys and female heroes should be DC’s priority to stay ahead of MC. But what are they waiting for? We know about Joker, but not much about SS 2 and BOP. We know about WW 2, but not much about Batgirl and BOP. MC has Venom, Captain Marvel and soon Black Widow.

It appears the director shortlist for Marvel's Black Widow movie has been narrowed down to three frontrunners.

Black Widow is expected to be one of the first movies released as part of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which helps explain why Marvel is so keen to lock down a director for the project asap.

...director Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) may well be Marvel's top pick to oversee Black Widow...

Deadline broke the news about Shortland, but has since learned that Amma Asante and Maggie Betts are also frontrunners to direct Black Widow at this juncture.

Why did MOS need a $225m PB? Aquaman has way more CGI and its PB is only $160m. MOS’ failure wasn’t HC's fault. MOS was doomed to fail the minute they gave it that high budget and decided that it should mimic CN’s TDK. It was a huge mistake to make CN a producer on MOS. SM is not BM. There’s a big difference between the two.

Rumor has it Cavill and Warner Bros. were unable to reach an agreement, despite rave reviews of Cavill's performance in Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and that means he may only have one film (or just one appearance) as Superman left on his original contract.

As recently reported by Revenge of the Fans' Mario Robles, Superman hasn't been a financial draw for the DCEU in the way Warner Bros. had hoped, and while his movies all brought in a sizeable chunk of cash, they were all budgeted with much higher expectations. So, moving forward, WB is looking at keeping those costs down, particularly when it comes to Superman movies, whereas Henry Cavill sees his star is on the rise and thinks his contract should reflect that.

Even Warner Bros. reportedly isn't opposed to having him back, but it has to be for the right price to avoid repeating a mistake they've made 3 times now with his character. While Walter Hamada and WB's heads are in the right place when it comes to budgets, Cavill might be one of the biggest places they should be willing to make an exception.

After all, costly decisions like the one to totally reshoot his part in Justice League and digitally replacing removing his mustache and turning him into a meme weren't due to his decision making, so he shouldn't be the one held liable for the results. A Henry Cavill Superman movie certainly has the potential to be a box office hit, even more now than it did in 2013. Justice League marketing also barely even used Henry Cavill, so any draw he has developed over the years wasn't even capitalized on (and that was still before his stand-out performance in Mission: Impossible – Fallout).

Recasting Batman would be unfortunate, but with Matt Reeve's story introducing a younger character, it's a lot easier to work around the introduction of a new actor. Henry Cavill's Superman can't get that same treatment, and even if he could, we're talking about the actor that started the whole universe off on what was originally a 5 part Superman story.

Walter Hamada's efforts to bring audiences around on these movies will suffer a major, avoidable, blow if the universe loses its focal point character, especially when he's coming into his own as a box office draw in other films. Trying to get audiences on-board with DC movies will be a lot easier if they don't also have to get on-board with a new Superman at the same time, especially if Henry Cavill's name is regularly showing up in big movies from other studios.

I thought I replied to BlueRose. sweat_smile I’ll agree to disagree with you.

It did well because it was the first Superman movie since Singer's.

“Superman Returns” (2006) should have done well too. It was the first SM film after Christopher Revee’s 1987 SM. The fact that SR was a sequel should have helped too.

So, if a 19 year gap didn’t have that effect, why would a 7 year gap?

It also had Chris Nolan's name associated with the production.

CN is one of the two major reasons MOS failed. Fans were concerned his involvement would turn SM into a BM wannabe. They were right. WB/DC thought his formula would give them TDK-like BO#. They were wrong. Fans and critics were not interested in a BM wannabe. But everybody involved ignored the fans and critics, which resulted in the failure of BvS and JL.

That said, the success of MC’s 2012 “The Avengers” is the reason why WB/DC ignored the fact

  • that a nobody like HC made an SM film with only 55% on RT and Metacritic the second highest grossing SM film of all time. (Many articles ignore inflation and call MOS the highest grossing SM film of all time.)
  • that ZS’s 55% MOS made more money and profit (2.969x$225m PB) than CN’s 84% “Batman Begins” (2.494x$150m PB).

MOS and BB were both franchise starters. However, the former had a nobody as the lead while the latter had a renowned actor as the lead.

MOS was actually a critical dud that had both professional critics and general audience members questioning HC's abilities.

I remember it differently. MOS (2013) holds a 55% all critics score and a 75% audiences score on RT. On Metacritic, the film received a score of 55 out of 100. Audience polls from CinemaScore show an A- on an A+ to F scale. I remember critics and fans blamed the script and ZS. I mostly read that HC looked the part but had too few lines.

BvS & Justice League were even worse.

I concur.

When I heard HC was out as SM, I thought the guessing was over. I thought that everybody could move on. But then I saw what ZS, DG and WB posted.

Zack Snyder Reacts to Report of Henry Cavill’s Superman Departure

Following the initial report, Snyder turned to his preferred social media platform Vero, where he shared a storyboard from 2013’s Man of Steel, accompanied by the comment, “It’s not an ‘S,'” a reference to a scene in the film in which Superman explains to Lois Lane that the emblem on his suit is the Kryptonian symbol for hope.

The Hollywood Reporter reported Wednesday that Cavill will not be reprising his superhero role, citing unnamed sources.

Warner Bros. released a statement shortly after the story's publication leaving Cavill's future in question.

"While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we've always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged." a Warner Bros representative said in a statement to CNN. (CNN, like Warner Bros., are both owned by Warner Media.)

I think all this storm was created intentionally. thinking

  1. Geeks wanted to force a reaction out of WB and or HC’s team, because they got tired of waiting. By starting rumors about WB being chaotic, hesitant and unreasonable, on the one hand, and HC’s team being demanding and difficult, on the other one, they knew that both parties would want to clear their names at some point. OR
  2. WB and or HC’s team created this storm to see how much people really want MOS2. I think it’s safe to assume that many still want MOS2.

Yeah, back to guessing. DG said the cape is still in HC’s closet. Why would she say that if HC was really out? And WB confirmed by saying that no decisions regarding SM films have been made. How can HC be out if no decisions regarding SM films have been made?

I think #1. Haters (they’re always the most vocal) were saying that HC is the reason why we won’t have MOS 2. DG was blamed too. WB is actually protecting HC. They’re the indecisive ones. If HC and DG were so difficult, why would WB take the blame and say that no decisions regarding SM films have been made?

WB is actually protecting HC? WB didn’t make that up, HCF. WB doesn’t make decisions about anything.

WB is the first studio to let a black woman direct a comic book adaptation. Where is NG? SS made more than 4x its PB. Where is SS 2? Margot Robbie was so popular that WB wanted her in JL’s Joker, in BOP and in a HQ&J rom-com. Where are all these films? Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is the only film after WW 2.

Is HC popular like MR? No. Did MOS make more than 4x its PB like SS? No. Why are geeks and we expecting to hear anything about MOS 2? rofl
