Discuss Moonlight

Just like in Brokeback Mountain, we have two gay men, neither of which gives off the slightest vibe of being gay. They are just regular dude bros who fuck each other. Because...you know, we wouldn't want to stereotype would we?

It's fucking ridiculous. I don't know why TV and film seems to need to portray gay men in this way. Gay men are faggy, and that's OK. It's like the people who make these films believe deep down that there is something wrong with being an effiminate man.

A to Z, you're cool, but I don't know where you get your statistics and some of your conclusions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_sexual_orientation#Modern_survey_results

In almost every survey the results are between about 1-2%.

I get my conclusions from my life experience.

I've got more than two gay relatives - and my family isn't all that large.

I work with a lot of gay people

About 1% of the population is gay. Exactly how many people do you work with, and how much is "a lot"?

I just wish to thank you for contributing to the emulation of the spirit of the IMDB boards.

Please never leave, but don't overdo it. You'll quickly get ignored by everyone and won't have any more people to bait.

lol, what kind of discussion is this?

I happen to be a gay man and I am not effeminate. I'm not a dudebro either. Being gay I have met a huge lot of other gay men and I can say one thing: everyone is different. Wow! Maybe a majority of gay men are effeminate. Good for them, there is nothing wrong with that. But that does not negate that gay men can be different, even very "masculine". So, of course a film can portray gay men who act masculine without being unrealistic.

The effeminate gay man is also a stereotype, regardless whether many gay men are in fact effeminate. The vast majority of portrayals of gay men in the media are effeminate gay men. This is why it is important to show that being gay does not mean to be effeminate.

Plus, a thing you might not have considered: Maybe you don't recognize all gay men you meet as gay. Especially if you expect all gay men to be effeminate.

More like 4%, in the US anyways. State Government and in our agency there are over 1400 staff.

Who are these effeminate gay men being portrayed in the media? I'm struggling to think of any.

Will and Grace had one very effiminate gay guy, and one fairly normal gay guy. Will is still a realistic gay man though. You seem to be thinking that I'm saying all gay men are outrageously camp like that other guy in Will and Grace.

I already posted the link

The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, a sexual orientation law think tank, released a study in April 2011[56] estimating based on its research that 1.7 percent of American adults identify as gay or lesbian, while another 1.8 percent identify as bisexual. Drawing on information from four recent national and two state-level population-based surveys, the analyses suggest that there are more than 8 million adults in the US who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual, comprising 3.5% of the adult population. Of men, 2.2% identify as gay and an additional 1.4% as bisexual. Of women, 1.1% identify as lesbian and an additional 2.2% as bisexual.

Sorry, I was actually going by the same article I had bookmarked under diversity, but was using the "group" percentage in the paragraph.

The key word here is IDENTIFY. These surveys rely upon self-identification, which is a subjective and unreliable measurement. That does not mean that the percentage isn't low, but that it's impossible to say how low (or high) the number is. It would seem that it's definitely a small percentage of the population, but until society deems homosexuality as "normal" I doubt we'll get anywhere near a proper accounting of how many people identify with that sexual orientation.

Not all gay men are faggy or effeminate. I used to work with a guy who was gay and I didn't have a clue he was until someone told me...Although he did dress meticulously, was that a clue?

yes.

Hahaha I just thought wow what a great dresser grinning

There is a discord among gay males about the "queens" or effeminate ones because just like your post most folks seem to think that all gay males are like that. They are all not into fashion, like to do drag and listen to disco. To be honest, these type of males are usually the ones the Masculine gays try to stay away from. They go after the Chris Hemworth's or Evan's.
