Are you actually suggesting that Mila Jovavich should have been cast as Major by the way? That would have worked out well, I'm sure.

There is only one actress that could possibly pull off the lead in an action film, but she is getting kind of old. Charlize Theron. I think Atomic Blonde will be a big hit.

No Resident Evil movie has grossed over 60m.

Resident Evil: Retribution 2012 had a _budget_of $65M - and it grossed $240M for ~4x ROI.

C'mon man. Just concede, ScarJo is not "the only" female action hero out there. And, if they were pinning success on her being the only one, then they miscalculated, 'cause they got her, and are not happy with their numbers.

So, you think they should have cast a 41 year old actress in the role of Major?

No. I'm not suggesting Mila or Kate or Kristana Loken or Angelina "should" have been cast. I'm just suggesting that the executives of the movie are right to question their choice of ScarJo; and I'm suggesting that working a little harder at casting options might have been a good idea. They were sure they got it right, and jammed it out at the public, and the public is not swallowing it. At least, not thus far.

I'm not sure where you get this inside info about what people at the studios are thinking. Most people seem to think Scarjo did a good job, but the story was shallow and hollow.

Dude, read the article. Kyle Davies, Paramount's domestic distribution chief, is quoted extensively. You think I'm making this stuff up?

"Now, the studio is conceding that the controversy over casting Scarlett Johansson as a character Japanese in both name and appearance played a role in the film’s dismal showing."

What, the article which says:

as in, casting a lesser known Japanese actress to play a Japanese role

Despite the fact that Major, like many anime characters is clearly white. It just goes to show how ignorant and racist SJWs are that they think that all characters in anime have to be ethnically Japanese. It would be like suggesting that all Marvel characters have to be white.

But I digress. Are we talking about "whitewashing" now, or about casting a good actress in the role? I thought it was the latter.

I posted an article. It says what it says, it speaks for itself.

As you have now devolved to "how ignorant and racist SJWs are," I'm done.

Eh, I already addressed that in my original reply. Then you pretended to not be talking about her race. Now you have flipped back to racism again.

I guess you are "done" becuase you are one of those ignorant racist people? Probably.

No, no, and no; but, clearly, explaining why you haven't near got it all figured out is a waste of my time.

Id like to point out that the reason they keep making Underworld and Resident Evil films is because they are relatively cheap to make so they make a huge profit back, even if they are terrible. Especially overseas for some reason. Scarlet Johansson was the second highest paid actress in 2016, second only to Jennifer Lawrence. So Im sure you can see how Hollywood would think throwing a huge name like that into a production would fix any and all problems. Like I stated before, an Asian lead would not fix this film. Not to mention no one can name an Asian actress that is relevant today in the US market. The script is watered down for 13 year olds with short attention spans unfortunately. The SJW movie critics just want something to latch onto, and in this case its the casting. Its an adaption, meaning they can do whatever they want with the material. Course when they changed the race in The Dark Tower it was 'progressive'...the hypocrisy is strong.

Sure, yes, I can see how they thought it. And, in the article, they are saying "oops, guess we were wrong." If I can see what you said, and they can see that they were wrong, the question is, can YOU see what they realize?

You may have, but I don't see it in this thread.

Lucy Liu. That wasn't hard for me, and shouldn't have been hard for you, or the movie makers.

The script is watered down for 13 year olds with short attention spans unfortunately.

Yeah, and that never works. Movies like Transformers (rated PG-13, made $700M) don't fill movie theatres at all.

The SJW movie critics

Again with SJWs - what is the obsession?

Ummm no. They simply picked the easy way out. They blamed the casting instead of the script/story they picked to tell. Ghost has one of the most amazing stories ever told, being that it inspired an whole generation of filmmakers. But they decided to water it down for the public, which is of course understandable, we are talking about Hollywood. The article says “I think the conversation regarding casting impacted the reviews.” which it did, and which it shouldnt have.

You may have, but I don't see it in this thread.

Ok let me state it than. An Asian lead would not have saved this film. The story was generic and straight forward for an average crowd. And slapping a PG13 rating on it to try and get more teens into it didnt help.

Lucy Liu. That wasn't hard for me, and shouldn't have been hard for you, or the movie makers.

Hahahaha...wait, are you joking? Please name the last huge Hollywood 100 million dollar film she got top billing in. It looks like she does mostly voice work now. SO you cant name one can you? Huh, I guess it is hard isnt it.

Yeah, and that never works. Movies like Transformers (rated PG-13, made $700M) don't fill movie theatres at all.

And thats the problem. The source material wasnt meant for that. They have every right to stray as far as they want. But when the film dosent perform as wanted they cant go around blaming the casting for it. Funny, the director and the producers havent said that they film isnt doing great because of the casting.

Again with SJWs - what is the obsession?

The obsession is that people dont like hypocrisy. Same thing with third wave feminists, those bitches are fucking nuts to! Always blaming others, and by others I mean males. Oh and if you are a white male you are basically the devil! You know with all that white privilege. Ive been a white male for 31 years now...Im still waiting for that white privilege to come my way...is there like a line Im supposed to stand in?

Oh my gosh, I think this thread has gotten out of hand. Can we just accept that the movie is just not very good content wise rather than the casting and move on. Stripping it down to a PG-13 is a big mistake, in fact I am now getting fed up of Hollywood making every action film into a PG-13 while there's hardly many R rated action films, R rated action films are viable, just look at Deadpool, it was the most successful R rated action film of 2016.

This video pretty much sums up the problem with PG-13. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-NeJRrgoTY

@OddRob Re: their "taking the easy way out", you might be right!

Re: hypocrisy, no one likes hypocrisy, but please don't attempt to suggest it only comes from the Left. We can break this message board volleying examples back and forth at each other from either side of the political spectrum, and I don't think the spirit of this message board would be upheld in so doing.

Re: privilege (whether male, white or otherwise), you can do your own homework to understand how that works. Or not. It's up to you.
