Discuss Quantum of Solace

Is this universally considered the worst ever Bond film? I'd certainly say so but maybe not everyone would go along with that...

To expand slightly what do you think the bottom three (official) Bonds would be?

I'd say:-

  1. Quantum Of Solace
  2. Licence To Kill
  3. The World Is Not Enough

@FlyingSaucersAreReal But the original poster said official Bond movies. And also NSNA is a remake of Thunderball.

And with the important distinction being that it only exists at all because it is based on the film (screenplay) of Thunderball and not the Fleming novel itself...

@The Midi-chlorian Count It's not an official Bond movie so in my books it doesn't exist. And like I pointed out the original poster asked for official Bond movies only.

I know - I am the original poster 😉

Anyway I was just about to reply to one of your earlier posts:-

My thoughts on LTK are very much in line with @AlienFanatic:-

I loathed License to Kill, which had the cinematography of a made-for-TV movie of the week. Unlike many, I never took to Timothy Dalton as Bond.

What's interesting looking at these films now is that LTK continued with the same writers who had been in place since FYEO. But in trying to take the series in a different direction (only partially shifted in TLD) it seems they took full inspiration from Miami Vice, which funnily enough was cancelled that same year...

I didn't see a bottom three from yourself - what would you go with?

@The Midi-chlorian Count oops my bad 😂😂 forgive me!

My bottom 3.... hmmm...

In no particular order (there's not a Bond movie I hate)... Diamonds Are Forever, Die Another Day, Moonraker.

Quite a lot of dislike being aimed at Die Another Day on this thread but, working my way through the Bonds just now, I'm looking forward to how I'll judge it on re-viewing.

I thought about it when coming up with my bottom three here but when I recalled it I'm thinking that ridiculous invisible car, the ice palace, Halle Berry, the daft giant laser beam and Bond surfing that tsunami 😂

Now that's Moore-style entertainment. When I thought of The World Is Not Enough though all I could recall was Robbie Coltrane (again), Begbie being a pretty disappointing, substandard villain and being really bored / underwhelmed by that diving in and out (was it?) a submarine ending...

@The Midi-chlorian Count Concerning DAD, I don't hate it. In fact I enjoy it for its Mooreness. I just hated the surfing. Was so fake looking and took me out of the movie. The invisible car I didn't mind. The technology behind it makes sense.

I love TWINE, the villains are interesting to me. And I loved the fight on the submarine. What movie are you on so far with your Bond Rewatch?

Up to Tomorrow Never Dies now, so will be rewatching TWINE and DAD shortly.

Will be interesting to see how I view them now - the Connery and Moore films are pretty much ingrained in my mind through youthful repeated viewings, the Bronson ones are a wee bit less familiar to me...

I must have seen every pre Craig movie at least 10-12 times. So they are all strong in my memory. Concerning TND, I like that movie. The plot is interesting with media wanting to creating a war. It had a the classic Bond formula ingredients. And I loved the bike chase.

No particular order (subject to change)

  • DAF
  • MR
  • DAD

P.S. How can the OP not like TWINE at all? Love the action, the acting, the women and the score!

Worst four

CASINO ROYALE (2006) opens in a public toilet - tells us all we need to know. QOS SKYFALL SPECTRE

I take it you don't like Daniel Craig as Bond then?

Casino Royale and Skyfall are rightly louded ad strong films. But a minority seem to really dislike Craig in the part. Such as yourself. For me Casino Royale is in the top 10 of the best Bonds. Probably Skyfall too.

Just finished rewatching the Brosnan films and I'd stick by what I wrote here - Die Another Day, for me, is definitely a far more enjoyable watch than The World Is Not Enough.

In fact the first half is really good with the captured bearded Bond, Hong Kong, and Cuba scenes - in fact it's only when we hit the fencing section (although I still enjoyed it) that this film starts going full turbo-charged Moore-ish.

For all it's subsequent daftness, it's still way better than TWINE...

Moore-ish is a good word for Die Another Day. They got back to the camp-comedy approach of the Roger Moore years. Glad that approach didn't last.

Agree. Die Another Day is good fun. Its trying go in a moore and connery diretion in one movie, swinging from one tone to another. But its a lot more imaginative and exciting compared with TWiNE for me too.
