年僅17歲天才高中生職業將棋棋士桐山零，因為意外從小失去父母成了孤兒，又不得已離開了寄養家庭，獨自住在東京舊市街中。他既沒有家人也沒有朋友，除了將棋，一無所有，因此在日常生活上及棋盤比賽中都背負著沉重的孤獨，直到他在因緣際會之下認識了川本家的三姊妹：明里、日向以及小桃，同樣沒有父母的三姐妹卻意外樂觀開朗。在與她們相處後，零的內心也漸漸溫暖了起來，勇敢挑戰一場又一場艱難的棋賽。
