Helena Jonsdottir studied at the National Theatre Ballet School of Iceland, with additional studies at Alvin Ailey, New York and film studies in Los Angeles. She has performed in and choreographed countless productions for television, film, music videos and the stages for over 30 years.

Helena has written, choreographed and directed many short films, including "Breaking voices' ' for Art Festival in Reykjavik 2002 screened at the Reykjavik Art Museum and Galway art festival. Created one of the 10 winning films at the 10 Moving North with "While the cat's away” in 2003 that was broadcasted on YLE,RUV,SVT,DR and NRK up to 3 years, then "Zimmer'' which won first prize at the IV.Video tanz preis 2003/2004 of SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne, Germany. The award winning short television/ film "Another/ Teine'' that won the Grand Prix at the Cinessonne Film Festival in Paris, France in 2006 a collaborations of film projects like with Estonia Broadcasting service ETV, EBU European Broadcasting Union, Arte Germany, YLE, SVT, DR, SDF, NRK, NPS and RUV. and award winning short film GONE with Ingvar E Sigurdsson in the house of the Icelandic Nobel prize winner Halldór Laxness and her latest work JOURNEY WINNER best installation at the International world film Awards WFA – IMDb in 2022.

Helena is recognized internationally for her work in Scandinavia, UK and USA. She was nominated in Los Angeles 2001 as the best choreographer at the Music Video Production Association Awards. Helena won the first prize in the Icelandic Dance Theatre Awards in 2003 with the work "Open Source” physical theater. She developed “Open Source” into a full evening production with an Irish version, which premiered at the Galway Art Festival in Ireland, also performed at Ghent Art Festival in 2004. In 2005 she created OPEN SOURCE an Icelandic version for Iceland Dance Company which premiered at the Reykjavik City Theatre. In 2007 she recreated OPEN SOURCE, a touring version with another cast that opened the Guangdong modern dance festival in China and Scotland. OP was running at the Reykjavik City Theatre autumn 2007 then it was chosen by the Belgian press and culture to perform in Belgium performing at the BOZAR Brussels in 2008. Helena has been nominated several times for the Icelandic Theatre awards and EDDAN the TV and film awards for her work as a choreographer, her own work, as choreographer in musicals, theater plays, film and television.

Her last film Gone has won several awards and is still running in festivals close to 100 and her filmart JOURney is now running in festivals, recent POOL movement art festival Berlin.

As a visual artist Helena created an installation project entitled “Freeze” in 2009 in collaboration with Grandi Studio Iceland, shown in Alaska and organized by the Alaska Design Forum and the International Gallery of Contemporary Art. Another visual art project “Birgir”, an installation, was shown in the UK as well as Hinterland on the River Trent in Nottingham. Furthermore, Helena was part of the traveling exhibition "100 artist see god" curated by John Baldessari and Meg Cranston 2002-2006. And several participation in solo or group exhibitions uptodate.

In addition to her creative projects Helena has been an associate professor both at the Iceland Academy of the Arts since 2007. At The Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts for several years and co-creator of CPA a Master department for dance artists at the Gothenburg University in Sweden and freelance internationally as a mentor, lecturer, masterclasses and workshop leader in physical cinema, creative script writing for movement back and front of the camera and body language as a film language.

Founder and artistic director of PHYSICAL CINEMA FESTIVAL in Reykjavík Iceland, a biennale festival a collaboration with Reykjavík City, Stockfish Film Festival, Bio Paradis, Mengi concert venue and many more.

2017 The Icelandic press and culture. Selected as the Icelandic Dance artist of the year. Awarded for pioneering work for dance + physical cinema in Iceland for over three decades.

Outside of her own works she is running the non-profit Estate of Thorvaldur Thorseinsson, writer and artist.
