I am not sure about shows like these who like to glamorise a hero who is anything but. In this case Assane is a thief - he is neglectful of his family and he is a cheating partner. His lifestyle puts his family in danger and he knows that but he wont give it up. He gets other people killed who would otherwise have survived. He has the nerve to comment on how the king of Belgium stole diamonds from the native population when he is in the act of doing exactly the same thing. That smacks of a huge hypocrisy. Stealing is stealing - no matter how it is done or on what scale. It is all coated in a thin veneer of charm that expects us to ignore all of the above. It is a sad reflection on society that most of them probably will.

I get it but this character has been the charming thief for over a century now. I don't think any critical thinker thinks this show is anything but a charming fantasy. See also Robin Hood! I'm really enjoying the twist on the old monocled character (and I'm not planning on becoming a jewel thief). I think you underestimate folks being inspired to steal watching this show.

I don't think they will be inspired to steal - just think it's not such a bad thing really. Standards of behaviour have dropped so far today - anything goes - there are no moral boundaries any more - and shows like this continue the message that it's fine - even laudable. Until it happens to you I guess.

I think the morale is more about the oppressed winning over the oppressor than anything related to stealing.
About “stealing is stealing”, a king leading the army and the police of a country (in a position of Power) stealing from a whole country is not comparable to a thief stealing for truth (chased by their oppressor); the balance of power is clearly not equal.
I am pretty sure people in power are less often stolen from than the average citizen as well, so the message could be “You’ve dwelled in our riches enough; give some back”.
