I'm not a huge anime fan but back in the aughts I did decide to explore the genre and was lucky enough to catch this on IFC back in the day. Such a lovely and tragic story and from what I understand it is based on an old Japanese book called The Kouga Ninja Scrolls and there have been many renditions of it including the film Ninja Scroll (1993). I recommend it to just about anyone who is a fan of both comics and tragic tales. I had bought the box set 10 years ago and completely forgot about the series until I was cleaning out my shelves and saw it and I am watching it again. I only wish I had it in blu-ray now.
