讨论 As Time Goes By

Used to watch this series years ago with my dad on PBS. I've since picked up the DVD box set and have started rewatching. This and Keeping Up Appearances were two of my dad's favourites - two BBC comedies that are probably too slow paced and not vulgar enough for today's audience.

Another delightful 1990s British series is "One Foot in the Grave (1990-1997, 2000)". relaxed

@wonder2wonder I'll have to keep that one in mind, thanks.

SPOILERSI think they retcon Stephen in series 3. When we first see Stephen, he catches on almost immediately that Lionel and Jean have known each other for more than just a few months and I think Lionel also admitts to not really being a psychiatrist. But by series 3 he's back to thinking the opposite again. Weird especially considering it's one guy who did all the writing.

That's interesting. When I rewatch, I'll remember that.

I notice that Stephen appears for the first time in S2E05 "Misunderstandings (1993)", and the second time - a year later - in S3E04 "Covering Up (1994)". He will appear for the third time - yet a year later - in S4E04 "The Affair (1995)". What will he know then?

I just finished series/season 3 and I can't decide who's the best couple between Stephen and Penny or Rocky and Madge - they're both hilarious.

Just finished episode 2 of series 4 and I have to admit a Gigolo's Pardon sounds delicious - may have to try one. Gwen Flack is hilarious - makes me wonder if Larbey based her on someone he knew.

Café Amaretto.

So it is a real drink, and with a much more sensible (albeit boring) name.

It's always more fun giving names to drinks (and food), e.g. 'Kiss on the Lips'. relaxed

Just finished series 6. Some great episodes. Jean finally receives the letter. Over 38 years late, ah well. Very touching moment.

Starting series 8. One consequence of watching a TV series, that has spanned years, all at once is you can see the slow progress/change happen very quickly. Characters who start off being broad and not tightly defined become so. Jean has become the meddlesome mother hen whose only concern is making everyone's choices for them, Lionel is the typical grumpy old man etc. I wouldn't say the show has "jumped the shark" but it isn't what it was just a couple seasons/series before.
