Season 2 theory: They are in Hell

Season 2 is way more heavy than season 1. To the point of not being very much fun to watch any more. Its like all the main characters are being tormented for their sins. Over and over again.
It got me thinking that maybe this is supposed to be a modern hollywood depiction of Hell. Has anyone here read Dante's Inferno? Just taking a wild, illiterate guess, but I'm curious if any of the levels of Hell in Inferno sound like this season's torments?

Your theory is a way more intriguing look at the series...but sadly I think that just demonstrates how much more creative you are than those who made it!
