Doctor Charles McNider was the original Dr. Mid-Nite. He became blind after a grenade explosion. When a wooden owl, Hooty, crashed through his window, he discovered that he could see in the dark. He developed special infrared goggles with which he could see in daylight and used blackout bombs in his fight against crime.

Beth Chapel puts on the goggles she found in Courtney's bedroom and becomes the new Dr. Mid-Nite.

Dr. Mid-Nite appears for the first time in S1E05 "Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite".
