The actress Parker Posey played Danica Talos in the movie "Blade Trinity (2003)".
If her female version of Dr. Smith is anything like Danica...

I had made a thread here about her role... down the memory hole it seems?

I wonder if her casting was influenced by the casting of a woman as the new Doctor in Doctor Who? It wouldn't surprise me if the makers of the new Lost In Space are fans of Doctor Who.
But whatever the reason, Doctor Smith is a man! And a man he should remain. Oh the pain... the pain!

In Doctor Who, the evil antagonist The Master changed gender first and became "Missy" The Mistress. This was such a success, that they took the next step and decided to do the same with Doctor Who.
If some of the "new" episodes are a rehash of the old "Lost in Space", you can expect more changes to suit the present times.

I did get a kick out of Billy Mumy playing the real Dr Smith that she steals the jacket from at the beginning.

Wait what?? I wasn't really interested in this show, but now I'm definitely going to check it out. Parker Posey is a legend to any fans of Christopher Guest films (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, Mighty Wind). She plays a great villain in Josey & the Pussycats and also Highland Park.
Side note to the purists who insist on Dr. Smith being a man, give her a try. None of the old fans agreed with casting Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, but now I can't see it any other way.

We don't want Smith to be like the 60's but they should portray the 'friendship" between smith and young Will.

'Friendship': mother figure, big sister, mentor or crush?

I'm already annoyed. Dr. Smith leaves Don to die and it's all resolved in a "by the way, oops... " conversation in the hallway in passing between the two of them. good grief....
well, hated dr Smith in the original and we're off to a good start here... :)

Even at 12 years old I hated the 60's LIS. Dr, Smith most of all. The first season was semi serious and not to bad and then it turned into the carrot monster of the week. It made the 60's Batman look like Shakspeare. Those Irwin Allen shows were so bad they were shareing monster costums berween the shows.

re the 'friendship' between Dr smith and Will:
This Dr Smith is a little heavy for that. I don't know how that works here. Zachary Smith was a blustery buffoon which played well with Will. Here, Will is very much still a child and I don't see him having the maturity that would play better with the sinister psycho that is June Harris. maybe later.....

I came here to comment on Dr. Smith as well. I'm currently on episode 8 and--the actress' past successes aside--her character is ruining the series for me. BTW, I'm not a purist so it's not because she's a woman (I was unfamiliar with the 60's show, only knowing that it shared the title and story). It's something about her demeanor, or her "omniscience."
I get that we aren't supposed to like her character, but I'm not buying her character. It's like she's a hairbrained nit-wit that keeps lucking out with her lies. Actually, that isn't even right...it's like they are portraying her smarter than she is or something...I don't know, I just know that I don't like it. I think it was bad casting, but what do I know. I would even be suspicious that it is because she's a woman, except that I am really enjoying Mrs. Robinson and her daughters all who are super-smart. Dr. Smith on the other hand is just an annoying idiot pushed forward by circumstance. I would far prefer it if she was a decent villian....
