Décembre 1865, Tennessee : d’anciens officiers sudistes se réunissent en secret et fondent le Ku Klux Klan. 1er décembre 1955 : Rosa Parks, une femme noire de 42 ans, refuse de céder sa place dans un bus à une personne blanche, avant d’être arrêtée. 29 août 1963, devant deux cent cinquante mille personnes, le pasteur Martin Luther King prononce son célèbre discours, "I have a dream".
