Loved the first season, it was fantastic. But I was not even able to finish first episode of season two, it's just so boring and pointless, the writing is terrible. Is it getting better with episodes?

Honestly, I think both seasons suffered from spinning out the story too much. Both suffer from too much complication which weakens the narrative. With the first season I lost count of how many breakaway camps there were and expeditions sent out to find leads or rescue. With the second season it was a succession of locations and a globe trotting/time travelling ghost. The same ghost possesses about half of the main cast. With both seasons lots of the same sorts of things kept happening in slightly different ways.
I found both seasons heavy going. It's hard to watch even an episode in a single sitting. But I think the pay off is better for season 2 which is a lot more nuanced imo. The end for season 1, 'the lone survivor turns his back on civilisation and lives the remainder of his life with the Inuit' is both fantastical and a cliche. That entire ending should have been cut.
The acting and cinematography is beautiful in both seasons. The production values are higher in the second. The first season has some really dodgy FX, Dr Who type stuff.
Definitely worth a look.

I saw the second series first and binned it after the first episode. Just finished the first series and it's well worth a watch despite any budget limitations.
