The ending felt very similar to the ending of The Graduate - happy to escape then smile then a bit unsure but more smiles here then drive off. It's actually like a long Black Mirror episode with some Inception, Matrix & Eternal Sunshine like scenes to me.

Yep, The Graduate came to my mind as well at the end. You're right on point calling it one long Black Mirror episode with a mix of different movies. I also loved the little bits of humour here and there. The talking bugs or the blue alien that got blown up. The whole half serious half fantasy atmosphere reminded me of Big Fish a little.
