Does this take place before or after the original film?

Sorry if I am not up on Dark Crystal lore. I remember watching this as a child in the 80s and I barely remember the plot. Actually rewatching the original now.

I watched the original again before starting the series, and now after I watched all episodes I have to say that the series is far more superior. TV show has more time to develop the characters and to dive very deep into the world of Thra. And still there are lots of things to discover in the next seasons. The movie had very limited time to show just the small part of Thra and now after the series showed so much more, I prefer the creators of the series to remake the movie as the last season of the show. The entire story of the movie can be really great 10 episode season.

Without question, the series is better. Of course, are also talking almost 40 years of technical developments to add to the mix but besides that, your point still stands and that is the character and story development is far superior. I found many of the scenes quite moving and always thought the original film was just meh.
