Were these in the book? I only know the film.
It takes away from the Man vs. Beast / Man vs. Man aspect of the story.

They weren't in the short story as far as I remember - the military opened up a portal to another dimension which was full of some major creepy crawly nasties. Nothing like the dead coming back though.
