Explaining economics to you is trying to explain math to a monkey.Of course popularity matters and is linked with merchandise example 1 even though ENT was off the air for years Star Trek merchandise alone accounted for 1-2 billion of income for CBS each year.Example 2 prior to the release of the prequel trilogy of Star Wars the merchandise alone was good for billions of income for Lucas Film annually .After the release of The Last Jedi a film reviled by most Star Wars fans the sales of merchandise dropped dramatically to the point that after the release of The Rise Of Skywalker hardly anybody is buying Star Wars merchandise(apart from Baby Yoda Dolls from The Mandalorian)and no merchandise from the new films is released and most other Star Wars merchandise is sold in discount .So yes popularity matters when it comes to selling merchandise and when that isn't selling it's a sign on the wall that a franchise is in decline.

Copying things is oké unless you make it integral part of the story new Trek steals stuff and puts it in the shows just because the familiarity of the things they steal it is used by people who don't know how to write new and creative stories for themselves. Another point is the amount of stealing it's not some idea or concept that is used and on which the new material continues it's own narrative .New Trek just steals because of a lack of creativity and I don't know it but the marker so far stands at 150 cases of blatant stealing whole segments from other movies,games and series. It's also possible to replace the ends of ethernet cables. It's a quick job, but does require a tool as well as a replacement end. Amazingly seems cheaper here in the UK where I could get a cheap toolkit that includes the tool, a few ends and a bunch of other tools for <£10 (a lot less than I paid for the tools separately years ago ). That said ethernet cables are pretty cheap so, unless you're into doing your own repairs, it's easier just to replace. I rarely use my tools and I do IT in schools for a living; only once in a while does it make more sense to fit a new end than replace the cable.

I think we're getting to the real crux of things here. I seem to remember that when the show started, various posters were complaining about the wimmin and the gays and the darkies taking over "their" Star Trek and it being pointed out that this sort of discussion was both hateful and against Trek's values. Then the criticisms changed to ones of the writing and canon of the show as it was realised that misogynistic, homophobic and racist views would not sway most people. Now it appears that the mask has slipped and the hatred can be attributed to those sorts of awful views.

The fiddle player really made the gig I attended. The lineup is quite fluid, apart from lead singer Captain Robert and his wife (on keyboards).
