But er.. seriously, what a lame idea it was. Michael? A woman? Meh. It's like reverse political correctness. "Hey, let's give a woman a man's name! "

Whatever. weary

If we end up with Idiocracy it won't be because of names. But just remember: Most people have an IQ of 100 or less, by definition. That can be a sobering thought right there.

Threads like these always make me laugh. "I understand teleportation might some day happen but they are stretching reality by giving a woman what is (in my sheltered opinion) a man's name."

I know the OP is joking but there are really idiots like this who will be the end of human creativity by getting everything dumbed down to the point that we eventually live in the world depicted by Idiocracy.

If you've seen the 3rd episode then you'll know you were wrong.

Most of Bryan Fuller's lead female character's have typically male names. He did it with Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls and now Star Trek.

Although, I have personally known a female Michael so it's not that weird.

That's because B.Fuller is Full of himself. Plus he's flaming gay. He likes everything Male so much that he has to put some in his Female characters as well. And worst of all he then left the show to Akiva F**king Goldsman.

I, for one, am not a fan of the androgynous names that mothers have been giving their daughters of late. Although older, more familiar ones like Morgan are just fine.

"mothers have been giving their daughters"

Are you sure about that?

Like fathers couldn't possibly have anything to do with it.

OK, yeah. I don't think I was being 150% engraved-in-stone serious in my post, but you have a point. Sometimes, I'll see a woman named Fredericka or something like that, and it seems like the father wanted to name the daughter after himself.

That's a bit different. That's a feminine version to a masculine name. Such as the following:

Danielle vs. Daniel Roberta vs. Robert Patricia vs. Patrick Josephine vs.Joseph Claudia vs. Claudio Frances vs. Francis (another example not exactly like the others)

Someone told me once that the "i" in Francis is for "idiots". So no one would ever make a mistake knowing which one is the correct spelling for the masculine version.

I wish they hadn't told me that because I think of it every time I come across the name.

It's like having a song you can't get out of your head. smiley

Sure, I like the name Simone for a woman... very nice name and it's easy to forget that it's the "feminine" version of Simon.

I like that name too. I always think of the music genres jazz and blues when I hear that name.

I guess I'm weird like that. smile

I'll agree with you mostly about this one (because he's done some ok stuff but also some not ok stuff). Fuller is one of my absolute favourite guys in the TV business and when I originally heard the new Star Trek was a Fuller show I just about exploded with excitement. When he announced he was leaving the show I was legit sad/worried. It sounds like Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts are the new official showrunners with Akiva providing "producing support" whatever that means. shrug

Not sure if you saw/read this article but Bryan mentioned a few months back that he envisioned the new show to be more like an anthology series. I personally think that would have been a hell of an idea, and one that maybe the ST universe needs. Instead though, CBS went with the more standard serialized procedural. Guess we'll never know what could have been.

Ah well, all is not lost (yet). I have personally loved the first 3 episodes (all stories by Fuller though... confused) so I guess we'll see where they take this thing. it's only been a single episode with our new captain but Jason Isaacs was damn near perfect.

Hi Travis. Did you happen to see my post on another thread about how the auto-formatting features (at times they seem like bugs) mess things up something horrible when you try to post something like a poem consisting of short lines? Some kind of "leave this alone" format code/command would be nice, if it doesn't already exist in some hidden/secret form.

@Knixon Yes, there's already some tricks for things like that. Head over to to the website support forum and post question about this there. I'll see what can be done.

Depends on the gender it feels like being at the moment

This discussion is ongoing on The Movie Chat board. I did a quick google search. Michael is not unknown as a woman's name. One site listed it as the 799th out of 49 hundres or so woman's names. In addition at least two actresses have the name Michael: Michael Learned and Michael Michele.

I have a problem with the term "actress".

Like why can't a woman just be known as a female actor if they must bring gender in it? Quite archaic in my opinion.

Isn't it the only profession that still does that?

The industry (and all awards ceremonies, etc) have referred to female actors as just that... they dropped "actress" at least 20 YEARS AGO.

I just took a gander at the award lists for the 2020 Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. Both list the winners of the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Joaquin Phoenix for the Academy and the Golden Globes) and Best Actress in a Leading Role (Renee Zellweger in both), as well as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the Academy (Brad Pitt) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Laura Dern)

Not to be overly sarcastic, but 2020 is certainly not 20 years ago. It seems the industry and award ceremonies still list them as actor and actress.

It's all nice and well to get rid of the actress and support actress nominations but I already predict that most best acting roles will go to men similar for supporting acting and what will happen is all kinds of feminist and Women's lib movements will protest this because of the lack of female representation not to mention that abolishing those nominations will even make it harder for minorities to get nominated because the overabundance of very good straight white male and female actors already working in the industry (the US for the majority is still a white country which has nothing to do with systemic racism but because of majority rule and it is therefore logical that the largest group will have the largest representation and chance to win an award)And even though the Academy Awards have announced new rules for getting nominated (where movies have to include a more diverse racial/gendered cast & crew) I am afraid those rules kind of diminish winning an Award because one never can be certain whether an actor or actress won the award for actually being the best (merit)but rather because of their racial background or gender.Plus one predicts that even more forced diversity for the Oscars will make the number of viewers even drop more than the already abysmal ratings the Oscars got this year.
