Surely this is plagiarism?
Why would the producers of Star Trek Discovery want a spoof version to be broadcast at the same time as the 'official' version? CBS should have taken legal action against Fox. Very surprised CBS have allowed this show to go ahead.

Get real! That's a bunch of BS. At the end of the day, if it weren't for Star Trek original and all the other Star Trek's that followed...there wouldn't be an Orville.
Discovery has just aired its first episode. And already you've summed it up as rotten writing.
There's something rotten here...but it isn't Discovery or its writing.

Not sure you understand my point. The writing of the first two episodes are very bad. Acting and characters are ok but the writing is the worst. It is a joke, really. I don't think they can write a Trek show any more. Axanar looked promising but nope ... gotta ruin the name with more from the same hacks that have been drowning us with their mediocrity if not down right lack of talent (Kurtzman and Akiva). They could have kept all the same characters and actors but it needs a completely different script, director, and for god's sake writers.
If you like it that's fine. I say it is garbage.

I'll sit back and wait for your script and directorial debut. Can't wait!

Akiva fucking Goldsman. How this hack still gets to ruin movies (A.k.a Dark Tower) and TV projects one after another is beyond me. He must have serious connections in Hollywood

Why are you so angry and aggressive? Do you have a relative working on the show?

I think you may need to work on determining real anger and aggression. No, I have no affiliation to the show.

I had the TV on as background , was not watching and though strange Star trek on now , looked and it was Orville playing , the music is defiantly similar , as are uniforms and other features . Strange to say the least spoof or not the Star Trek would allow it

I watched Discovery and just couldn't get into it. I can't tell you why...I just don't enjoy it, and I'm disappointed about that.
However, I love The Orville. I do like the Family Guy humor here and there--like the dog doing his thing in the first episode--but overall it's a good drama and the stories are good stories. There is character development, and it makes you think about things; and it's not all jokes. The last episode ended on a rather serious and ominous tone. It helps that Brannon Braga is on board. I have enjoyed his work in the past, Star Trek and outside of Star Trek (e.g., FlashForward and Terra Nova were great shows). I look forward to this show each week. The characters are likeable and it has that Star Trek feel, or course. I'm not in any sense of the imagination a cheerleader for Seth MacFarlane, but he makes for a believable captain and has something good going on here. He has passionately wanted to do a show like this for a long time and I think that is part of the reason for its success.

@GForce59: You spoke so well and in detail about liking The Orville...me too. I'm puzzled why you would think you couldn't do the same in telling us why you don't like Star Trek Discovery.
In any case, I am enjoying The Orville more than I thought I would. Honestly, I was expecting it to be kind of too silly and borderline stupid. Surprisingly, it's not.
That last episode...Majority Rule was very interesting and reflected our current society. It was well done. The humor can be a little cheesy at times. But overall, they mostly strike a good balance between humor, show content and science.
Too many opinions straight out the gate with very little to no reference at all was the problem...in my opinion with Discovery. So I'm going to start fresh and give it a go.

Discovery could be a fine stand-alone show, but they're calling it Star Trek which means it has standards to meet. Not least being the appearance of the Klingons, and ships 10 or more years before TOS having much more advanced technology than original 1701. All of which combines to make it, by those standards which the producers have volunteered for.... Crap.
And that's even before getting to lousy writing and the rest.

Surely it's not. Otherwise, we'd be hearing about it.
Similar or like minded concept doesn't rise to plagiarism. Theres no copying of stories and show content. We've had hundreds of shows throughout television history that focused on similar concepts. Medical, police, courtroom, and legal dramas, etc.
Yes, The Orville is inspired by Star Trek...but it isn't Star Trek.
Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Dark Shadows, Hitchcock Presents all shared the same genre back in the day. But that's about it.
The West Wing and Madame Secretary share a concept. Damian and The Exorcist...again, same concept and genre. Beyond that, nothing else.

This is going to sound like a lame and lazy answer, but I just can't put my finger on why I don't like Discovery. This might sound odd coming from someone who likes space operas, but I don't like how dark--literally--the bridge of the Discovery is. I know it has to be because of the captain, but his excuse as to why he won't get his eye repaired is--in my opinion--equally as lame. I don't like the modern DC movies for the same reason--they are literally dark and I have a hard time following what's going on. I've accepted the new (at least to us) Klingons...I think that's actually a cool storyline. But also, it looks as if the technology on these ships are more advanced than the 1701 Enterprise. I thought they did a pretty good job with the NX-01 Enterprise, making it believable to be a century before. It had a 21 Century Navy feel to it, and I could see how they would transition into a more wide open bright set up in time for the 23rd Century. But Discovery more resembles the NX-01 than the ships that are out there now. I was expecting the opposite. The writing and the scenes also seem to be kind of chopped up....as if they don't fit nicely together. The transition isn't smooth. I don't like Lorca. I know in the real word every captain is not going to be an Eagle Scout, but it's like I'm forced not to like him. He's not the star of the show, but I still look to the captain to be a good guy and have morals. I guess it doesn't help that I have always felt Jason Isaacs is an ass. I think we all would agree Gene would not approve this, but his meddling is what made The Motion Picture such a bad movie and why he was demoted to Executive Consultant for the rest of his days...basically to get him out of the way. Rod apparently is OK with the way the crew interacts, and I'm OK with some tension as we saw when that rule was broke on DS9, but it just seems more of the story now...the lack of cohesion and the petty drama. It's more about that then the exploration. I guess I'm also kind of bummed because I was hoping for a lot of obvious nods to TOS since it's around the same time, and also Enterprise since that happens to be my favorite Star Trek series. There has been some here and there, and I read about the apparent Denobulan appearance in the cafeteria in the third episode, but I couldn't pick her out. Overall I was hoping for more. Maybe there will be. I'm not saying I won't watch it again, but it hasn't captured my interest. Perhaps I will binge watch it at the end of the season.
I don't know, perhaps that wasn't a bad explanation after all.
