The hookers and the pimps are the most compelling characters in this show. I think this show would be better if you had a lot less of: the twins, Abby, the mafia, the cops, the brother in law....basically all the other players in this. I think a version of The Deuce where it would mostly be the girls, pimps, johns and the Maggie Gyllenhaal becoming a pornographer would be great all on its own. But I understand that the show is about the birth of porn as we know it today so they HAVE TO throw in the mafia. But they could really pare down the cast and flesh out the interesting ones.

You’re right! DO YOUR RESEARCH ON HISTORICAL ACCURACY YOU MILLENNIAL SHOW WRITERS!!!
The biggest historical blunder I always notice is that they put WW2 era women in stilettos ALL THE TIME, and stilettos weren’t invented until the 50’s! Grrrrrrrr!

Each season is set in a different year. Season 1 was 1971, Season 2 was 1977, and the final Season was in 1985. Who's the Boss? (unfortunately) was around in the mid 1980s. All in all, they did a pretty good job keeping the pop culture anachronisms to a minimum. They probably screwed up the most with the cars on the street, which is where a lot of period pieces drop the ball.

I see what you're saying. I was most interested in the hookers and the pimps too, but I think you needed balance to broaden the scope. The Brother In Law showed the corruption of what was a decent union family man into a murderous hustler banging his girls. Abby showed the futility of her noble efforts, and the twins (I agree, less would've been better) served as the anchor. The police and the mafia rounded out the picture, as did the gay stories and the city government in bed with financiers and developers.
That said, the most heartbreaking characters for me were Thunder (Ruby), Ashley (Dorothy) and Lori (??). I also wanted to find out more about what happened to Darlene (Donna) and Larry. It's like they fell off the canvas after season 2.
