At least it seems as if they had their suspicions and wrote the final ep of the season so that it would work as a series finale.

Apparently it was SyFy's biggest show in its heyday; which is odd considering how little coverage the show seems to get, even on "genre-friendly" sites.

Showrunners take note: this is how you write an ending that both gives the viewers closure, but allows for continuation if someone else picks your show up.
