First: the townspeople were all loaded with cash as they confiscated the money from all the dead in the cemetery.

Second: Garitty's assistant was able to make the illusion disappear the second Garitty received money to send the dead man back to the cemetery this way. They had some pre-maturely invented devices like a microphone, projector and ear phones. The assistant was listening with ear phones on to a small microphone planted on Garitty while the assistant was running a projector and the second Garrity received money the assistant turned off the projector and the illusion seemingly disappeared to the townspeople.
