She figured out Kara was Supergirl without having to be told. I feared a prolonged storyline where Maggie was afraid Supergirl was a romantic rival for Alex's affection. And Alex agonizing over whether to let her in on the big secret.

I hadn't even thought about that kind of scenario. Glad that never happened. But she did seem to figure out pretty quickly what nobody else seemed to be able to.

I don't really care for the Maggie story line. I think it is too much a distraction from the main arc. But I also give her credit for figuring out who Supergirl is. I guess that's why she's a detective.

Every new show has to fill their own personal diversity quota

The only thing that bugs me about Maggie Sawyer is that her character most of the time is only there to remind the viewers that Alex and her are dating. :( This shouldn't be a a thing for a series regular to do, but we have it - she's there to remind the viewers of homosexual relationship that they are having and nothing more.

One of the problems with the token lesbian is she's only needed to qualify one of the main character's gayness. I'd like to see a token character with a really good backstory that captures the audience's attention. In addition, I don't see why one of the characters in the main cast can't be opposed to the homosexual lifestyle. By making all the characters congruent to the idea is plain boring. By having at least one of the major characters opposed to the idea of homosexuality gives an opportunity for some good story lines and character development. I guess I'm saying token characters should be more than background fodder, and add something to the story.

Good point GNS1991. You put it exactly right. If she added something to the story, practically, no one would care about the homosexuality aspect.

Maybe in the future she will. Being that she's a cop and all she could be tied in to some of the stories. But as far as somebody on the show being opposed to the homosexual lifestyle, that would surprise me if any show did that. They'd probably have people picketing outside the studios with actors and people involved in the show getting death threats and organizations calling for boycotts. you're not allowed to disagree with the homosexual lifestyle anymore without getting major backlash.
