Who is your favorite character on the show and why?
Personally, I like John Smith. I like that he'll stop at nothing to protect his family. He's also a major badass, which is pretty cool.

Probably the most interesting character of the show, brought to live by an amazing actor. Will remember for years.

Definitely John Smith, he's a realist like me.

I'm surprised I enjoy this show as much as I do, because I don't find any of the characters very sympathetic. I do like the Japanese Minister of Trade. And I think Rufus Sewell is hot; I'll watch anything with him in it. Don't like his character, though. I could never like a Nazi, especially someone in the SS. Trained monsters.

You just lack perspective, when you live in such world you really don't have much choice. It's quite clear John Smith is pretty conflicted.

They were starting to show his backstory; I remember he fought for the Allies as an American G.I. He switched sides when he saw which way the wind was blowing, I guess? I know in Nazi Germany, when Hitler came to power, Hitler was idolized by most and those that didn't were subdued, through terror or concentration camps. (I'm sure you know all this, anyway). I don't know if I would have had the character and courage to stand up to the Nazi party, especially if I had a family to protect. I'd like to think if I was single I'd fight for the underground. Fortunately, I never had to make that choice. My dad did, though. As for my perspective, here's where I view Nazis from: my dad fought for the U.S. in WWII. He had occasional nightmares about things he saw, and would not discuss, til his death 50 years later. Additionally, my first job in the sixties was at a steel mill. There were many Jewish concentration camp survivors there, with tattooed forearms and horrible stories to tell. I could never admire a Nazi. Not even on "just a tv show". I don't know what the demographics are for this program, I'm old enough to have read the book when it first came out, and the show may not be directed at my generation. Peace.

Not just a G.I., he was an officer in the US army.

I don't admire John Smith being a Nazi, but that doesn't mean he's not my favorite character in the show. His character is the most interesting to watch unravel. Plus Sewell is just so amazing to watch.

I didn't remember he was an officer. I hope to see more of his backstory; he must have had a crisis of conscience, I'm sure. And you're right, he's conflicted. Well, he's got a lot of power now, let's see what he does with it.

When he was in that motel with his wife and a bomb blows up a nearby city i he was wearing an officers uniform.

I agree, the Japanese Minister of Trade is my second favorite character. I think Sewell is an incredible actor, the best on the show. The actor who plays the Japanese Chief Inspector (Joel de la Fuente) is also a very good actor.

The Japanese TM looked so familiar to me, I looked him up. Turns out, he was a very bad boy in Mortal Kombat! I think he has the most interesting story arc, too. I've been a Sewell fan since 1994, he's done a lot of British period drama. He was excellent in Zen, and I loved Eleventh Hour. Yes, Joe de la Fuentes does a great job. The inspector is a very interesting character.
