No, I don't need lots of explosions or car chases or even meth labs. No, I wasn't expecting Breaking Bad. But this is getting silly. It's not that there's that much wrong with the scenes by themselves, but please just move the story forward already.
The acting is ok, there's lots of effort (maybe disproportionately) put into cinematography and montages, but please for the love of all that is holy: the show is in it's 3rd season and they're still hiding an inherently entertaining character (Saul) executed perfectly by a great comic actor (Odenkirk) and getting caught up in minutiae of how Jimmy becomes Saul. We don't need that much time for that. We could've guessed the sibling rivalry drove him that direction early in the show, yet here we are stuck with more torturous episodes about Chuck. McKean is ok as Chuck and the writing for his scenes is generally fine, but there's just too much of this storyline. We get it: Chuck wants to screw Jimmy. Great. We saw that last season as well. Let's move forward.
Do you really need to watch a long Don Eladio scene at the opening? Of course not. A few minutes? Fine. They are just getting caught up in tangential side stories. 3 seasons isn't really necessary to show that Mike likes peanuts or Mike enjoys sitting quietly watching TV in the dark or Kim can make phone calls and write on sticky notes or Jimmy likes flashy suits. Skillful writing can also mean it's efficient. All this supposed character development and slow burn isn't really adding anything and it's just stalling. They've been circling for years now and they refuse to move forward.
Why even bother to call the show "Better Call Saul" if the character will never be a part of it?

I've always said to those that haven't seen BCS yet to not expect it to be Breaking Bad all over again. It can't be. What's so great about the show as is, is everything is so subtle with so much attention to detail. While I agree that the first 2 seasons you could say 'nothing really happens' however it's not a bad thing. If you dove in quickly to the 'Saul' character, then you'd basically have Breaking Bad again... but we've already seen that.

i have a co worker that is watching BCS now. She loves it. Has never seen Breaking Bad. Didn't even know BCS was a prequel. So getting her thoughts on all this she has nothing to compare too and every one of these characters is new to her. She doesn't think it is slow at all, if anything builds up anticipation is what she said as she is curious about how all this plays out. she will then watch Breaking Bad once this show is completed. I think those who have seen BB first may find the show a bit slow at times (we know what becomes of Saul, and Don Eladio and with Gus and Hector) so there is no surprise there. She has no idea how Jimmy becomes Saul and Breaks Bad himself.

I'd recommend binge watching the show.
I've had different experiences with shows based on whether I watch week to week, or wait for Netflix.

Because it's not a show about Walter White and therefor the vibe cannot be the same. Doesn't work.

Well the vibe now is the same w Fring, Saul, and cartels. And the show is FINALLY pretty good bc of them. What was with the meandering and tangents? Op is 100% right. It's why the viewership is down to only 1.5 vs the 6 million it started with. Numbers don't lie. And only reason for the slight uptick in recent weeks is bc people are starting to talk about Gus and LPH.

I also generally agree with the OP. I wanted to watch Saul get into the situations only he can get into then see how he gets out of them. The sky was the limit. The way they're doing it now isn't terrible but I have no feelings towards any of the characters. I enjoy slow moving plots and attention to detail but something is missing here and it's passion. And I am not amused at all with bringing back BB characters. Been there, done that.

Yes, I was a HUGE fan of Breaking Bad. I understand that the writers want to better introduce us to the periferal characters of BB, but I agree with you, yes, OK! We have all been aquainted with the characters. Time to move the story along. The only 2 things that need to be answered is what became of Kim and why and when did Jimmy become a manager of Cinnabon. Right?!

We know why Saul is at the Cinnabon. What happens to Kim is a differant story. Or what happens to Chuck? The OP is right...Jimmy better become Saul by the end of this season.

Thanks for a great post. I however am one of those that likes the long scenes and slow story movement. Perhaps because of the finite timeline (6/7 years?) the writers are dragging it out on purpose. When BCS catches up on the BB years, then what? The only way I see for BCS to continue is to skip over the BB years and see what Saul does after Cinnabon.

One of the last episodes in Breaking Bad, when Walter and Saul both go into hiding trying to get a new identity while in that vacuum repair shop's basement, Saul says to Walter "Hey, I'm a civilian. I'm not your lawyer anymore. I'm nobody's lawyer. The fun's over. From here on out, I'm Mr. Low Profile, just another douchebag with a job and three pairs of Dockers. If I'm lucky, a month from now - best case scenario - I'm managing a Cinnabon in Omaha."

The last two episodes was some of the best TV I've watched recently. Compelling; I'd watch Mike doing his thing all day long!!
