So before season 3 starts and maybe gives us a reason why the Departure happened, I think it can be nice to speculate. Since I don't like any religious solutions, I can propose scientific. I think he most plausible scientific solution is that some kind of exotic matter burst hit the Earth. It could be antimatter, or maybe dark matter, or some quark burst from a supernovae, something we are not familiar with. And this burst that went through Earth hit it in many places, causing matter that was hit to be annihilated and evaporate completely in a second.
The reason some of the people around the departed were not hit, is because the rays of he burst where thin and could hit very tiny areas. Or maybe it was moving as waves, not in straight line and just randomly hitting areas in space. And this exotic matter could be affecting only specific matter, like carbon based creatures, or living beings that mostly made of water. This is why objects that were made from different material were not affected. As for the cases like Lori, in which her unborn baby disappeared, maybe she was hit by very small portion of the exotic matter, not enough to interact with her full body but enough to evaporate a small and weak organism inside of her. Could be that she was also affected by this burst mentally and physically, but not enough to evaporate her.
In any case, this is my theory and I think it can explain many things. For example, animals also disappeared or were affected. Like deer and dogs that suddenly changed behavior, became confused, aggressive and so on.

Sounds like you are suggesting that people that disappeared on October 14th were on it? They all just coordinated their disappearance at exact same time all over the world, right? And unborn child too? The show is about how people handle something traumatic as this, when so many people just vanish. So yeah, the show digs deep into what kind of people are we. Some will see it as opportunity to run away from their families and hide. Some will definitely try to scam insurance for money. Meg's fiance was not suspecting her as being departed, he knew she run away from him. This is just how humanity rolls, there will be crazy enough people to even murder, hide the body and blame it on departure, why not. This is exactly what the show explores, what would people do.
All disappearances after October 14th could be a reason for some people to suspect another departure, but most of people were checking if there are more people that disappeared at the same time and were skeptical if more people didn't. It's like right now, some people say that they were abducted by aliens. So what is our response - we all think they are lunatics, because without evidence we won't believe them. And the fact these people mostly have mental issues doesn't help. But what if few million people will claim that they were abducted by aliens at the same day, and we all will know someone who was abducted and it was just normal sane person, would we think all of them are lunatics? No, we will suspect something is going on.
It's all a matter of numbers, this is why no one pay attention when a single person disappears, there could be many reasons. But when few million disappear, this is when we start scratching our head. During Nora's visit in New York in first season we saw how profound could be human imagination when we try to explain unexplainable.
Regarding animals disappearing, no one would really know. No one keeps track of deer in the forest, and house pets may just run away and people wouldn't know. I just speculated about it based on my theory and its possible implications. That if this affected humans it is possible that animals were also affected and the behavior of deer and dogs can be sign of that.
And regarding Kevin and the Limbo in season 2, I can still explain as him being mentally ill and simply hallucinating. But I still need to re-watch it again.

Are you for real? Seriously. At 9/11 there were 3,000 victims in NY, no one misses them, it was just some small insignificant event, right? Wow.
Now, you write a lot and I don't want to read most of it since you bring absolutely ridiculous points. So I'll try to answer shortly.
For a person that doubt my points because they were not shown directly in the series, you sure base your entire argument on something that was not shown in the series. Accidents? Random disappearances that create misleading connection? A person disappeared from the moving car that hit Matt's car, did the driver just jump out of it? Did the woman that was having sex with Kevin just rolled under the bed and hide from him? And all other departed that their stories we don't even know. People disappear all the time, sure. But not in millions at the same day, at the same second and all over the world. The world is not reacting just like that for accidents, the government is not just creating special departments to investigate statistical patterns to understand what happen. If there is anything that can be said for sure is that there was an event of departure, and no one understands why. That's a fact in this show.
If there is anything certain in this world is that numbers DON'T LIE. There is even such known expression, ever heard it? Human perception lie, eyes lie, human psychology lies, humans lie. The numbers are cold, the statistics are objective, numbers don't lie. Don't be ridiculous.
Your Salem example: in Salem was conspiracy between closed group that conspired to say the same story, using prejudice and superstitions. And closed society of Salem beleived to majority over individual. The story of Salem is about something else, The Leftovers is about something completely different, even completely opposite of Salem. There is no conspiracy, the experience of the people that left and their understanding of what happened is completely individual, there is no one single version of reality that is being told. In fact there are so many versions of what happened that people have hard time believing in anything. There is absolutely nothing similar between Salem and Leftovers.
The symbolism of what happens in the show is way too complex to analyze it on simplistic level as you do. There are a lot of levels, the baby Jesus doll has different significance to each of the characters. In fact Leftovers is a show about difference of perspective and individualism, how each person has his own view on reality, and how one traumatic event affects each one and their own way.

Man, it's great to see this kind of feedback for this brilliant but underappreciated show. "International Assassin" was the best episode of TV last year imo. Love Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon too.

I actually think that episode "No Room at the Inn" where Matt and Mary are trying to get back into Jarden after their wristbands were stolen, was one of the best episodes in the TV history. That was absolutely brutal.
And @Invidia, I'm sorry but I can't continue responding to you, it's just not worth it. Your mind is a mess, I just can't grasp any logic in your arguments to structure and understand your point of view. You clearly have different understanding of the show and its meaning. Well, good for you.

In fairness, this show has warped my mind profoundly ala TWIN PEAKS. Yeah I suppose you could make a case for many of the season 2 episodes being the best. I've been left speechless by the writing, performances and directing.

I love MD, I think it's a masterpiece. Maybe even Lynch's best film. I'd forgotten that Justin was in it. Will have to give it another watch. IE was way too opaque and/or abstract for me. I felt it was like a dream where you haven't got a clue what the hell is going on. Did Laura Dern wonder what was going on, I wonder? It had Grace Zabriskie being creepy though, which I liked. Hypnotising stuff.

Yeah I think Nora has been suppressing things for a while and could easily crumble now. I hope they don't ditch Meg and the Murphys into the background. Liv Tyler is in career best form on that show. I'll miss Ann Dowd though.

Wow, that's a lot to digest. I wasn't aware of the time skip because I tend to avoid trailers (apart from STAR WARS maybe). The Guilty Remnant is such an integral part of the show so I'm glad to hear that Evie is back. She's got a real steely determination going on. There are so many 'what ifs'. Only time will tell! P.S. Not sure if I could rewatch INLAND EMPIRE; I found it quite challenging. But I did say that about DONNIE DARKO onec, and now it's one of my favorite films!

They got caught in the vortex of a glitch in the spacetime continuum...which is why it was planet-wide instead of in just one location.

@Invidia I cannot wait for S3 and hope your ridiculous if not brain dead babbling of show is completely blown up like I suspect. Cannot even comprehend how someone would leap to all that you've posted.
Promise you this, if you're even 1\2 right I'll buy u dinner. You've made a great show seem below avg with your theories. Thanks for nothing UGH

I think someone is being VERY ironic with the title of the final episode.

I think it's safe to say that we will never know what caused the Departure and I'm fine with that because I like shows that doesn't serve everything on a silver platter. It happened, they're gone and it's in the past. I'm more interested in what's going to happen in the future as I see the show as more of a social study right now. My money is on an open ending.

Hear hear. I seems that @Invidia has extremely selective perception, taking in only small parts of what actually happens in this show and twisting it to spew bunch of nonsensical sentences that sometimes contradict what she/he said in other sentence but mostly they just don't have proper internal logic for someone to even understand that sentence.
Regarding the first episode, it was awesome.
