Season 2 is very good. Season 1 isn't so great though. I almost gave up on the series after season 1. The show is very dark and philosophic. If you like that kind of stuff you may enjoy it.
There is a religious aspect to it, but it's not a preachy type of one. The series is based in fantasy, so there are after life story lines and miracles that occur. One of the main characters is also a priest. The show doesn't expect you to prescribe to a particular religion, or any type of religion at all, to get it.
I wouldn't mind the dark and thought provoking tone of it. Is there a religious aspect to it?
It focuses on the idea of religion a lot, but doesn't confirm any specific religion; it's not an explicitly Christian rapture story like Left Behind, if that's what you're thinking. The show's about a supernatural event that shakes everyone's worldview no matter what their religious position was; it seems to imply some kind of religious background to the world, but it doesn't fit neatly into any existing religion's cosmology, so everyone is equally confused and disoriented. You get to see how it turns some people into religious fanatics, shatters the fanaticism of others, results in entirely new religions being created, and so on.

Matt is the minister, but one of the many cults that spring up after people disappear takes over his church after one of their members hits him in the head with a rock to keep him from making a payment at the bank so they can take it away from him (Matt was also behind on mortgage payments after people stop going to his church after people disappeared).
And the reason they did this was because Matt also kept producing material letting others know those who disappeared weren't saints or good people due to some of them having criminal records.
I agree with others, religion is a big part of the show, but it's not at all preachy. It examines a lot of different possible reactions to a massive tragedy like this - self-harm, suicide, religion, nihilism, and many more - and it is a fact that humans often turn to religion in times of crisis. It's very interesting. I really like the series but actually enjoyed S1 more than S2, unlike others.
Season one is good but season two blew me away. It's a spectacular show, with complex and interesting characters who aren't easily pinned down into 'good' or 'bad' categories. The story is surreal but also grounded in emotion and its portrayal of human relationships. Justin Theroux surely makes David Lynch proud with this one. I can't wait for the final season, although I agree we will likely be left with more questions than answers. I read the book after having watched the show and this is one of the rare times for me that I thought the film version far better than the book.
I would fast forward through season 1, it's nothing special, the acting is great though. But the 2nd season, yes, a masterpiece! Agree about the case of book being inferior. Definitely in this case.
I am re-watching the series again for season 3, and I like it even more from second viewing. It was great when I watched it first time, I liked it a lot, but now I pay attention to writing and plot structure, including hints that were placed in various episodes for something that will happen later. And I love it, this is a very well made show.
I don't think there is explicit religious line here. Since the religion is such a big part of human history, obviously for such unusual event many people will turn to religion to explain it. But the show keeps it neutral and is not using religion to explain things. It's just showing people in this word using religion to make sense, but right after that we see something to cast a doubt on that explanation.
The show plays very well on this sense of the doubt and lack of real answer, it doesn't take any specific side. Things just happen, and you as a viewer are free to give it any reason you want.
Not sure why any of you are thinking Nora kids alive and not gone? None of things that happened in S1 or S2 gives any hint to that or the leap from a short clip. IMO the question asked is more of a link to Kevin going to hotel to find Patti. A way for Nora to go to another side like Kevin did.
I guess we see what it really means now that S3 has started but just doesn't seem possible. These millions disappeared instantly without any chance of a back door exit because they didn't like situation. Like Kevin in hotel with woman during event she disappeared while they were in bed

I really like it. I thrive on the weird and strange. I'm just hoping we get decent answers in the final season. I suspect we won't.
