I sort of get that feeling, he was focused on his devotion to the state until he met Misha, I believe that was his name, Phil's son, I think having Misha not meet his Father or Phil not meeting the son was to much for him to take and maybe his breaking point. After meeting Phil's son he decided he was done with this line of work and I think he had some guilt about not letting Misha see his Father. In that same episode, he also admitted that Phil was right about his daughter and that he should have kept her out of it, I guess that was his way of making amends with Phil before he leaves for good. He seemed like a man with a lot of regrets as he stepped into his self imposed retirement.

Yes, I agree. I also thought it was interesting that Philip & Elizabeth are now actively lying to Paige by omission. They told her about the evil-wheat plan, but not that they found out otherwise. They also have kept from her the sleazy aspects of the job, like having sex with "marks" to manipulate them. We might expect this from Elizabeth, but not Philip. It will be interesting to see if his final conversation with Gabriel changes how he reacts to Paige's indoctrination.

It seems odd that they would just write off his character.
I assumed there would be more to this story (suicide, capture, whatever.)
We'll see.

I also thought that they would play up Phil's Russian Son from the affair a little bit more, instead we only got him for a few episodes and then sent back to Russia, I think that was one of the reasons Gabriel retired and I thought he would have come clean with Phil, however he didn't.

Gabriel commented something to Claudia about how he doesn't like lying to Phil and Liz, but we have yet to find out exactly what lie he is referring to. After all, didn't he tell them he doesn't lie to them?
