Clark ended up being stuck on the farm for another three seasons, his days at college lasted a few episodes and didn't have much progression until season 8, there was no proper indications how he was ever going to be reporter Clark/Superman in his lifetime. All they did was keep postponing his training at the Fortress but that went away after season 8, him training at the fortress makes sense if SV lasted only four or five seasons but if longer don't use the Fortress use versions where he had no Fortress training.

Young Bruce Wayne from Gotham is on a much faster track than Clark was.

I think Smallville's biggest problem was too much filler. Also dragging the Clark Lana romance on way too long. I think shortening it to 12 episodes a season would have been perfect. It would allow the budget to stretch further as well as more time for the writers to focus on the main narrative. At 22 episodes a season it's hard not to have filler with that many episodes.

It would've helped of they had kept some remaining characters who showed up from time to time. I feel when Lana, Jonathan and Pete left there was nothing really special or unique to black mail Clark with or worry about losing. No community to care about.
I wish Lex hasn't been cloned, but a thorn in his side after high school. Making his father good was already a stretch and we lost a good villian. Doomsday was nothing special
