The Robbie and Mary situation

Doesn't it seem a little irky that Robbie started out as the troubled guy and was generally accepted. While Mary was the good girl who became trouble and sent away.
I guess after Biel wanted to leave they had no choice, but i feel like they could've handled it better.

It always bothered me how they decided to handle Mary. Instead of spending 2 seasons on character assassination, they could have sent her away to college on a basketball scholarship and brought her back as a guest star. I do get it though, they needed drama and using Mary and Simon for that was a better idea then bringing in a guest star every time.
