Discuss Mission: Impossible

This time around, there is no cleverly hidden self-destructing tape and secretary to disavow knowledge of their existence.

Jim is Kidnapped and Barney, for the first time in the series, takes charge.

In order to get Jim un-kidnapped, the remaining three members of the team must steal a letter from Charles Drake's safe deposit box and deliver it to the head honcho bad guy. It's got some highly incriminating evidence and Mr. Drake wants to retrieve it in order to get immunity. So the team has to not only get to the safe deposit box (child's play) but delay Mr. Drake and the FBI from getting to it first.

In the meantime, Jim easily tricks the dimwitted but bloodthirsty Geoffry Lewis who is supposed to be guarding him. It's a fun side story.

Things go wrong. There is a fourth set of players in this episode that slowly reveal themselves. And the IMF didn't count on them...

Since the plan goes wrong, it ends up with the team at gunpoint so Casey has to distract them by doing what 70s television women do best -- scream. A fist fight ensues. The good guys win. The end.

It's a goofy episode, but it was fun to watch. I'll go ahead and put it in the win column.

Peter Graves directs.

As I was watching it, I wondered if there are more than one actor who appeared in both a Marx Brothers movie and Mission: Impossible episode. I doubt it.

I can make it into a trivia question sometime.

Jim and Barney shouldn't go on a vacation together. It just seems to be bad luck. Last time it was Barney who got in trouble; he was jailed for murder.

What I thought was interesting was that this was the only time (as far as I know) that the bad guys from a previous episode (in this case in season six) figured out that the IMF team were government agents and that they were the reason the casino operation was stopped.

Yes, with all those bystanders, including criminals and police men, it's ridiculous for them as spies to stand there as a team, before leaving. Anyone could have taken pictures, or given a description.

It's a wonder this didn't happen more often. I remember a season three episode where Cinnamon gets captured and tortured, but she was by herself when it happened.

Wasn't that the one where a pigeon set off the alarm and we discover that she suffered from claustrophobia?

Yes it is. In real life, Barbara Bain suffered from claustrophobia, which is why she only wore a mask in a two-part season three episode.

I can't remember if her claustrophobia ever came up again in another episode.

I'm pretty sure that it didn't.

But was there ever a scene again where she was in a confined space and didn't seem afraid?

Not that I know of.

It's a good thing Barney isn't Claustrophobic. How many times has he been stuck in a small box or in the innards of a building?

I saw no indication at all that they figured out they were agents at any point in this episode until the very last scene when Jim said they were contacting the police. Seemed to me that they took it as they were thiefs. Did I miss something?
