Discuss Mission: Impossible

So -- In the season seven opening credits, we are treated to "Also starring Lynda Day George" but when the team assembles, Lenore Karidian from Star Trek is there instead. And, through some expository dialog, we learn she is an ex convict. Okay. I'll roll with it.

In this episode, the team takes down a gambling kingpin. I'm not 100% on board with the IMF when they are just glorified vice cops. I much prefer they use their talents to take down dictators, or help stabilize the world's hot spots, or stop missiles from blowing up the world.

I have nothing against people gambling. I don't do it myself, but I think it, like most vices, is basically a self-punishing crime. I say legalize all vices and regulate them.

Oh well. These guys are evil enough and it is fun to watch the IMF scam them, slowly pulling layers off of their own scheme to selected villains, setting them against each other, but not giving the whole thing away until it is too late.

I'll enjoy this season, but will probably consume it in small chunks. Sukhisoo doesn't binge (except maybe on weekends).

You made some interesting points. Of course, as we all know, TPTB decided to keep all the Missions stateside for seasons 6 and 7. Which did take away from the overseas adventures. I loved them. I miss the crazy names of countries , i.e. Lumdawanda.

Besides budgetary concerns, I'm guessing that these powers that be read the tea leaves and saw that cop shows were becoming more popular on TV and in the movies. The French Connection was very popular and award winning. The Dirty Harry Franchise was getting underway. Hawaii Five-O, of course was at the height of its popularity. The Streets of San Francisco and Kojak were making their way onto the scene.

By contrast, spy based entertainment was waning in popularity. Sean Connery quit the James Bond franchise and the early Roger Moore movies didn't really make a lot of money. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and I Spy were, of course, long dead and nothing equivalent really took their place.

I think Mission: Impossible was trying to capitalize on this new trend.

I enjoyed this episode. There were some cool twists. Barney really needed to ditch that mustache

I like how the mustache comes and goes in the 7th season. One of the consequences, I suppose, of the broadcast order being different from the production order.

For this particular season I am watching my old MI dvd set that I bought long before it was officially released. So my season 7 is actually in production order I think.

Mine is definitely in broadcast order. Casey will be involved in a "deep cover" mission, but will show up next time as a regular cast member and then be back in "deep cover" again while Lenore Karidian takes her place. And, yeah, the Barney mustache comes and goes.

I kind of like how he gets to affect a new accent occasionally. He gets to interact with the villains more rather than being locked in box or an elevator shaft.

Without a Rollin or a Paris, Barney definitely stepped up to the plate and so did Willy. They did a great job. My only issue was that time where they had Barney wearing a mask and impersonating somebody and doing the voice. That was a bit too far out for me to buy. It makes it look like anybody can do it. At least they never had Willy do it.

I agree that Rollin and Paris should have been the only disguise experts. Unfortunately, these disguises were so much a part of the show's schtick that they probably felt they had to keep doing it. I'm guessing they couldn't afford another top-tier actor to step in and fill that role.

I knew that I wasn't the only one who didn't like that mustache. I KNEW IT!
