Gripes About The Movies

MK asked me to try to contribute to this board a bit more often than I have been, so here ya go. Spoiler Warning
It's been my experience that true fans of the original MI TV series HATE Cruise's movies. I certainly do. I thought a thread devoted to our reasons for hating them might be therapeutic. My two biggest ones are as follows:
My first and biggest gripe is about the first film. Dammit, you DON'T make Jim Phelps a rogue agent!!. That's like having Marshall Matt Dillon of "Gunsmoke" rob a bank or LAPD Officers Reed & Malloy of "Adam 12" commit murder. IT DOESN'T HAPPEN!! Would LAFD Paramedics Gage and DeSoto of "Emergency!" refuse to rescue someone? NO!! Would 918th Bomber Group General Savage of "12 O'Clock High" defect to the German Luftwaffe? NO!!
After that, I barely paid any attention to the rest of the franchise. I think I saw 2 & 3 on cable simply because there was nothing else on I could tolerate. I've never seen 4. There is a 4, right?
My second gripe is about the whole franchise. They don't follow the signature pattern of most of the series eps. I have cherished memories of watching it with my parents. We'd see Barney and/or Big Willy setting up various equipment, etc. with only a vague idea of why thy were doing it. There was a point in almost every ep where we said "Oh that's what they were setting up!" or "That's why they were doing that!" The films just don't capture that IMHO.
Let's hear 'em, movie haters.

I can understand why Classic MI fans would hate the movies. The first one was awful. Jim Phelps a traitor? No bloody way! And MI2 was even worse!
MI3 wasn't too bad. MI Ghost Protocol was pretty good, and MI Rogue Nation was very good. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I enjoyed the movies for what they were. I had no expectations at all that it would remotely resemble any of the dynamics of the series so that was not a shock to me or disappointment. I will be rewatching them all again after I finish my viewing of the original series and the 1988 series so I will give my thoughts on the movies as I watch them.

I fully support your your position on the Mission Impossible Movies. Some Classic MI fans hate them, some like them, some love them, some don't have an opinion. The important thing is that we discuss our problems with the movies without descending into the childish insults and obscenities that helped bring IMDB down, IMHO. One thing I will say about the first Mission Impossible movie. While I hated that Jim Phelps turned out to be the bad guy, I remember thinking, "Now that was one hell of a plot twist! "

It's certainly not like the television series.
I though the movies were more like an American version of the Bond films with Tom Cruise (a.k.a. Ethan Hunt) as equal or superior to James Bond.
And like the rebooted "Star Trek" movies, this "Mission Impossible" happens in another universe where there exist someone like Ethan Hunt who is the hero fighting corruption within the IMF, the Syndicate ("Spectre") and world crisis.
In the next movie he might even take on the "Bourne Identity".

I agree with w2w. They're not bad spy movies. They're just not in the same spirit, IMHO, as the"MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE" we grew up with.

The real problem with the MI movies as I see it is by labeling them "Mission Impossible" it precluded a classic Mission Impossible series of movies with the trademark teamwork, timing, complex plotting, etc. If they had made the movies and called them something else, and not have hijacked the Mission Impossible theme, I would have no problem with the movies. I enjoyed the last two movies in the franchise, but by being called "Mission Impossible" it prevents a truly classic MI from being filmed.

That's an interesting point. I hadn't considered that. So you feel by them using the name, they blocked what could've been an awesome reboot of the series.
