Boy, they sure didn't do much with that character. Seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

I agree. I remember reading it a while ago. It was an amazing epic poem - the language, the story, the characters would eventually influence almost every fantasy story or series, it was the base for heroes in the genre and all the eventual cliches. Very iconic, but unfortunately almost always misrepresented or forgotten.

Yep. I was expecting something grand and it really was a dud.
