I get what you mean, it is annoying when a show doesn't respect its established story.

It was never stated on the show where Emma got her last name until this episode.

Yes you are right i just watched the pilot and her other centric episodes it was never mentioned how she got it i got mixed up sorry writers you didnt mess up lol it was my memory.

That is what Jennifer Morrison said once. It was her head canon that Emma got the name Swan from her first family. It was just never something that happened on the show. That is why the writers and the actors head canons can't really be accepted as canon because they often contradict the show.
