Do you have an official proof that this episode have been broadcasted as a special episode ? The page you link list this episode as part of season 2.

the page say: "Patchy the Pirate Presents the SpongeBob SquarePants Christmas Special" is an alternate title for this episode, used by various cable providers and Nickelodeon's website.[3] Amazon shortens this to "The SpongeBob Christmas Special."[4]

None of these pages are official pages.
Furthermore, the Wikipedia page that you link starts with ""Christmas Who?" (also known as " Patchy The Pirate Presents The SpongeBob Christmas Special") is the eighth episode in season two of SpongeBob SquarePants". So, it seems that the episode was broadcasted as a regular episode.
