As I recall, the live scenes were filmed in a way that could be shown in widescreen, but the special effects weren't. Or maybe vice reversa. But either way what I'm reading/hearing is that the "remastered"/"HD" versions you can find now, for example on Netflix, are not the real thing, yet. The actual transfer hasn't been done yet, so what Netflix did is like an up-conversion or something. Not the same thing.
Watching on HBO MAX after just finishing up a binge of Deep Space 9. I have to say (watching both for the first time) they're the same show? Serialized sci fi show on a space station.
Watched the Pilot. It's cropped in 16:9 and the quality is poor. The first episode in the original aspect ratio looks pretty great - maybe that's when they started the new HD transfers. Also, the pilot has some horrible digital effects. Episode 1 seems much more modern. I have to say so far the series is horrible though. I know it gets better but man these first two are Plan 9 From Outer space level horrible.

Well whatever you do, do NOT watch the "upconversion" of the Buffy series, they made a complete mess of it.

It's in 1.33:1

The real horror story, though, is what they did to Buffy The Vampire Slayer (series).

Apparently it's on Disney+ but I don't know if they're showing that version.
