I occurred to me that the concept of a TV series with over 50 seasons must seem alien to people in other countries. I can't think of any US soaps that go on like this. In the UK there are several: Emerdale, Crossroads, Eastenders. Australia has Neighbours and HOme and Away. I guess it's a British/Australian thing?

Yep, there are plenty. I think the current longest running soap is The Young and The Restless, which has been airing since 73. The longest of all time was Guiding Light which went over 70 years and 15000 episodes.

Oh really? But why have I never heard of those? Coronation street gets the highest viewing figures of anything on TV in the UK.

Some of the really long soaps have been cancelled like Edge of Night, As the World Turns and Guiding Light. I think Guiding Light originally started on the radio. Unfortunately, people who didn't understand the genre got put in charge and run them into the ground until they were cancelled.

I just started watching CS here with the episodes from October 2017 on Hulu in the U.S. Hulu goes back about 13 months.
We still have General Hospital (1963) and Days of our Lives (1965)
