Reviewers seem to think that Roald Dahl would prefer this movie instead of the 1990 adaptation "The Witches (1990)". Especially because of the similar dark ending.

That could be, if not for all those other changes, like for example moving the location from England to Alabama (USA), three instead of two mice, and everyone living with the grandmother singing "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge.

Chris Rock as narrator makes everything more like a 'comedy'.

Children watching the movie will still get the impression that it's kind of a happy ending, because everyone is singing and partying at the end. Some might even think that if the movie is a success, there might be a sequel where the witches all over the world will be vanquished and everyone will be back to normal again. Then there will be even more song and dance. Cake for everyone!
