In the mid-16th Century, a long running conflict between two of the most powerful world religions is building up to a climactic battle in the Mediterranean for the very soul of Europe. Facing each other are two highly trained forces. The knights of the Order of St. John, a small but formidable Christian military Order. And the Muslim Janissaries, the fearsome crack troops of the Sultan. The historic events are told through the eyes of a young Ottoman conscript and his future arch-rival, a novice Christian knight. From an early age, both are trained to fight in the name of God, and Allah.

V polovině 16. století vyvrcholil ve Středomoří konflikt mezi dvěma nejmocnějšími světovými náboženstvími bitvou, v níž šlo o samotnou duši Evropy... Rychlý vzestup Osmanské říše, jeho rozsah i směřování se řadí k nejmimořádnějším obdobím historie. Tato rozpínavost byla až nepochopitelná a křesťanská Evropa ji vnímala téměř jako apokalyptický konec světa. V roce 1565 došlo k osudovému střetu těchto dvou zcela odlišných náboženských a společenských kultur. V boji na jednom z menších středomořských ostrovů se střetly dvě dokonale vycvičené jednotky. Na jedné straně stáli Johanité – příslušníci malého, ale vojensky zdatného rytířského křesťanského řádu, jenž měl na Maltě jedno ze svých hlavních sídel -, na druhé obávaní sultánovi válečníci – janičáři. Příběh odvahy i nelítostnosti obou stran konfliktu, jenž vešel do dějin jako obléhání Malty, ilustruje i setkání dvou konkrétních mužů...

Entre reconstitutions et éclairages d’historiens, ce documentaire-fiction retrace la lutte acharnée que se livrèrent chrétiens et musulmans pour le contrôle de la Méditerranée au XVIe siècle. À travers le destin de deux jeunes soldats, il montre l’expansion de l’Empire ottoman, le mode de recrutement des janissaires et l’influence des puissants ordres militaires chrétiens.

Die Rivalität zwischen Religionen und Kulturen galt neben dem Streben nach Reichtum und Macht lange Zeit als einer der Hauptgründe für die weltweit ausgefochtenen Kriege. Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts etwa kämpften im Mittelmeerraum, nahe der Insel Malta, Christen und muslimische Ottomanen um die Vorherrschaft ihrer jeweiligen Religionen in Europa. Jeder im Namen seiner Religion. In diesem Kampf trifft die osmanische Elitetruppe der Janitscharen, auf die Ritter der katholischen Johanniter - ein Militärorden, der auf Malta stationiert ist.
