Discuss The BBC Television Shakespeare

Item: The BBC Television Shakespeare: Season 1 - Episode 7

Language: en-US

Type of Problem: Incorrect_content

Extra Details: Please note that this season should only have SIX episodes. There is a mistake here, where all 37 episodes have been listed in season one, but they are also correctly separated into future seasons. So "season 1, episodes 7-37" should be removed as duplicates. Thanks.

Do you have an official proof that the first season was originally broadcasted as only 6 episodes ?

Thanks for your reply! You can find the season list halfway down the British Film Institute page: http://www.screenonline.org.uk/tv/id/459382/index.html The Royal Shakespeare Company sells the complete DVD set, and you can see that the whole series is only 37 episodes (i.e. seasons 1-7): https://shop.rsc.org.uk/products/bbc-shakespeare-collection-37-disc-box-set-bbc-dvd-2005?srsltid=AfmBOorfOWsSmHksH-EtXf-KXOsYRaL5M4PWLkplpE1vY4VeqCc4Y2Zg I also point to Susan Willis' book "The BBC Shakespeare Plays". Happy to share photos of pages in that book if helpful! I also have a degree in this field and can attest that this is all the plays that were filmed. There are 37 in total over seven seasons. Those extra episodes are mistakes, added on to the existing 37, hence why they have no titles or information. I hope that helps?

The way they are released later on DVD is not a proof that they were originally released in multiple seasons.

Oh, I quite agree! The concern is not around whether the episodes are listed by production season or in one single season. It's that there are 31 additional episodes that don't actually exist, and have no information on them, which makes the record inaccurate. The BFI page I linked to clearly lays out the episodes and their airdates by season (see halfway down the page). As does the IMDb page for the series (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14801528/episodes/?season=1&ref_=ttep) and the Wikipedia page, which is exhaustively researched with endless citations. Happy to provide some quotes and citations from the Willis book if that's genuinely of help. But I think it would be great if we can remove those non-existent episodes, as they contain no data and give a false impression of the length of the series.

The first concern is wether this should be listed as a single season or 7 seasons.

Once this has been solved, we will be able to fix the remaining problems like duplicate episodes.

As indicated in the main subject, I have open an internal discussion with other moderators and you will have to wait a little.

ah thanks, I didn't know about that - appreciate it.
